Accept the decree, for destinies are to be accepted,

And the sword of death is drawn among creation.

And we, the people of Islam, accept His decree,

And have no course but contentment with the decree from Him.

By my life, tearing our collars is not our custom,

Though the kindled fire of ghada wood blazes within us.

Can a person's Islam be complete before he

Submits to God's decree and entrusts his affairs to Him?

Such is Time: if it approaches you smiling,

It will turn away, scowling and forsaking you.

And if it grants you closeness, there will intervene

Its estrangement, barring the way to closeness.

So do not be deceived by its clarity, for its clarity

Is clouded just when you wish it pure.

And a person's days are numbered, and he,

When his days are over, collapses and passes away.

So where are those who were kings? They have passed away,

And all they possessed of sleek, swift steeds.

And they left us without provisions; every one of them

Answers death in haste, offering no resistance.

God decreed al-Mukhtar's fate—alas for you!—He decreed it.

And we surely accept what God has decreed,

Though the pillar of noble deeds has collapsed,

And the lightning of generosity's and glory's demise has flashed.

Generosity has shed its twin necklaces and cast off its earrings,

And become forsaken, abased, and despised.

And that is only because the man who was devoted

To it, and lifted up all who stumbled, has died.

Yet in al-Mukhtar's brothers after him there is solace:

They are the assembly's luminaries, men of radiant faces.

They mend what death's hands have damaged through his loss,

And rebuild what has collapsed after him.

May God water the land where he rests with showers of dew,

Turning into meadows what was not meadowland.

And may He lodge him in the Gardens of Eden, in bliss,

And may he gain salvation and approval through what he sent ahead,

By the honor of him who made guidance plain to those who followed it,

And cast grit into the polytheists' eyes and closed them.

Upon him be God's blessing, as long as at forenoon there coos

A dove, and the full moon sets after it has shone.
