لاmay you not تَبعَديbe far away إِمّاeven if ذَهَبتِyou have gone شامَهShamah
فَرُبَّfor many a وادٍvalley نَفَرَتyou startled حَمامَهits doves
Be not far away, even if you are gone, Shamah.
Do not go too far wherever you went, my love
For you startled the doves of many a valley.
For many a valley has lost its doves
وَرُبَّand many a خَرقٍwilderness قَطَعَتyou crossed قَطَعَتyou crossed قَتامُهُits dust
وَرُبَّand many a قِرنٍfoe فَصَلَتyou severed عِظامَهhis bones
And many a wilderness you crossed—crossed through its dust.
And many a cloak has had its patches torn
And you severed the bones of many a foe.
And many a horn has had its bones broken
وَرُبَّand many a حَيٍّtribe أَهلَكَتyou destroyed سَوامَهits grazing herds
وَرُبَّand many a وادٍvalley جاوَزَتyou passed أَعلامَهits landmarks
And you destroyed the grazing herds of many a tribe.
And many a living being has lost its breath
And you passed the landmarks of many a valley.
And over many a valley its flags have crossed
وَرُبَّand many a سَهبٍopen plain قَدindeed حزَأتِyou cut across هامَهits heights
وَرُبَّand many a شَهرٍmonth عَبَرَتyou passed through أيّامَهits days
And you have cut across the heights of many an open plain.
And many a pool of water has had its bubbles burst
And you passed through the days of many a month.
And many a month has seen its days pass
وَرُبَّand many a قَفرٍwilderness قَدindeed عَلَتyou climbed آكامَهits hillocks
وَمُضمَرٍand a lean-trained horse قَدindeed أَلَكَتyou chewed لِجامَهits bridle
And you climbed the hillocks of many a wilderness.
And many a barren land has had its hills surmounted
And you chewed the bridle of many a lean-trained horse.
And many a hidden one has lost its turban
وقَطَعَتand you severed مِنthrough جَريِهِits running حِزامَهits girth
فسيقَso it was driven جَريَat the pace الوَعلِof the ibex والنَّعامَهand the ostrich
And through its running you severed its girth.
And the belt of its running has been cut
So it was driven at the pace of the ibex and the ostrich.
So it ran like a zebra and an ostrich
ورُبَّand many a زقٍّwineskin شَرِبَتyou drank أثامَهits sinful wine
ياoh رُبَّmany a غَورٍlowland جِئتُI came to منof تِهامَهTihamah
And you drank the sinful wine of many a wineskin.
And over many a rugged terrain it quenched its thirst
Oh, many a lowland of Tihamah I have reached.
Oh how many a chasm have I come from its abyss
وَشِعبِand a ravine نَجدٍof Najd لمdid not أَهَبI fear عُرامَهits fierceness
And many a ravine of Najd—I did not fear its fierceness.
And the mountains of Nejd where I did not lose my way
