And a mourner whose cry I heard at dawn—

my heart took fright, recoiled, and found it strange.

So I steadied my heart, then said: 'A dove

called to Saq Hurr among doves that scattered in alarm.'

And a waterskin, its left bound to its right—

I keep my clothes clear of it; its water has dwindled.

And a sandal, like a quail's torn remains, I left

beside a dusty track, like a woven band.

Then, if my death does not visit me or meet me,

I shall walk through Dahw or ‘Idaf at Nawra.

I walk along the outskirts of al-Hamat, and at times

my foot pounds across Busbut, then ‘Asansar.

I seek the sons of Sa‘b ibn Murr in their lands,

and I shall meet them if God grants me time.

And one day at Dhat al-Rass or in the valley of Minjal,

there we seek the far-off one who has entered the lowlands.
