مَا شِئْتَ كَانَ، وإنْ لم أشَأْ

مَا شِئْتَ كَانَ، وإنْ لم أشَأْ

وَمَا شِئْتُ إن لَمْ تَشأْ لَمْ يكنْ

وَمَا شِئْتُ إن لَمْ تَشأْ لَمْ يكنْ

Whatever You willed came to pass, even if I did not will it.

Whatever you willed was, even if I did not will it

And whatever I willed, if You did not will it, did not come to pass.

And whatever I willed, if you did not will it, did not happen

خَلقْتَ العِبَادَ لِمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَ

خَلقْتَ العِبَادَ لِمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَ

فَفِي العِلْمِ يَجري الفَتَى وَالْمُسِنْ

فَفِي العِلْمِ يَجري الفَتَى وَالْمُسِنْ

You created Your servants according to what You already knew.

You created mankind for what you already knew

So within Your knowledge the young and the old run their course.

So predestination flows for the youth and the aged

فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِيٌّ، وَمِنْهُمْ سَعِيد

فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِيٌّ، وَمِنْهُمْ سَعِيد

وَمِنْهُمْ قَبِيحٌ، وَمِنْهُمْ حَسَنْ

وَمِنْهُمْ قَبِيحٌ، وَمِنْهُمْ حَسَنْ

So some of them are wretched, and some of them are happy.

Among them is wretched and among them fortunate

And some of them are ugly, and some of them are beautiful.

Among them ugly and among them beautiful

عَلَى ذَا مَنَنْتَ، وَهَذا خَذلْتَ،

عَلَى ذَا مَنَنْتَ، وَهَذا خَذلْتَ،

وذاكَ أعنتَ، وذا لم تُعِنْ

وذاكَ أعنتَ، وذا لم تُعِنْ

Upon this one You bestowed favor, and this one You forsook.

Upon this one you conferred blessings, and that one you forsook

And that one You helped, and this one You did not help.

And you helped that one, and you did not help this one
