تَمَنّىwished رِجالٌmen أَنthat أَموتَI die وَإِنand if أَمُتI die
فَتِلكَthen that سَبيلٌa path لَستُI am not فيهاon it بِأَوحَدِalone
Men have wished that I might die—and if I do,
Men wished that I would die; and if I die,
that is a road on which I am not alone.
Then that is a path on which I am not alone.
وَماand not مَوتُthe death مَنthose who قَدalready ماتَdied قَبليbefore me بِضائِريharmful to me
وَلاnor عَيشُthe life مَنthose who قَدalready عاشَlived بَعديafter me بِمُخلِديmaking me immortal
The death of those who died before me cannot harm me,
And the death of those who died before me does me no harm,
nor can the life of those who live after me make me immortal.
Nor does the life of those who live after me make me immortal.
لَعَلَّperhaps الَّذيthe one who يَرجوhopes for فَنائيmy demise وَيَدَّعيand calls
بِهِfor it قَبلَbefore مَوتيmy death أَنthat يَكونَbe هُوَhe himself الرَديthe one to perish
Perhaps the man who hopes for my extinction and claims it
Perhaps the one who hopes for my demise and calls
before my death will himself be the one who perishes.
For it will himself be the one to perish before I die.
