Let the days do whatever they wish.

And be content in spirit when fate decrees.

And do not be distraught at a calamity the nights bring,

For the calamities of this world do not last.

And be a man, steadfast in the face of terrors,

And let generosity and loyalty be your nature.

And if your faults abound among humankind,

And you would be glad to have a covering for them,

Cloak yourself in generosity, for every fault

Is covered, as has been said, by generosity.

And never show abasement to your enemies,

For the gloating of enemies is an affliction.

And do not hope for generosity from a miser,

For there is no water in fire for the thirsty.

And your sustenance is not diminished by taking your time,

Nor does toil increase your sustenance.

    Neither sorrow nor joy endures,

Nor misery that befalls you, nor prosperity.

If you have a contented heart,

Then you and the owner of the world are equal.

And he upon whose courtyard death descends—

Neither earth nor sky can shield him.

And God's earth is vast, yet

When fate descends, the open expanse grows narrow.

Let the days be treacherous at every turn,

For medicine is of no avail against death.
