رَأَيتُI have seen العِلمَknowledge صاحِبُهُits possessor كَريمٌnoble
وَلَوand even if وَلَدَتهُbegot him آباءٌforefathers لِئامُignoble
I have seen that the possessor of knowledge is noble,
even if ignoble forefathers begot him.
لَيسَdoes not يزالُcease يَرفَعُهُraise him إِلىto أَنthat
يُعَظِّمَesteem أَمرَهُhis standing القَومُthe people الكِرامُnoble
It never ceases to raise him until
noble people hold his standing in high regard,
وَيَتَّبِعونَهُand they follow him فيin كُلِّevery حالٍcircumstance
كَراعيlike a shepherd of الضَأنِsheep تَتبَعُهُfollow him السَوامُgrazing flocks
and they follow him in every circumstance,
as grazing flocks follow a shepherd of sheep.
فَلَولاfor were it not for العِلمُknowledge ماnot سَعِدَتprospered رِجالٌmen
وَلاnor عُرِفَwas known الحَلالُthe lawful وَلاnor الحَرامُthe forbidden
For without knowledge, men would not have prospered,
nor would the lawful or the forbidden have been known.
