اصْبِرْ عَلَى مُرِّ الْجَفَا مِنْ مُعَلِّمٍ

اصْبِرْ عَلَى مُرِّ الْجَفَا مِنْ مُعَلِّمٍ

فَإِنَّ رُسُوبَ الْعِلْمِ فِي نَفَرَاتِهِ

فَإِنَّ رُسُوبَ الْعِلْمِ فِي نَفَرَاتِهِ

Bear patiently a teacher’s bitter harshness,

Bear patiently the bitterness of harsh treatment from a teacher.

for knowledge takes root amid his stern rebukes.

For knowledge settles firmly through his rebuffs.

وَمَنْ لَمْ يَذُقْ مُرَّ التَّعَلُّمِ سَاعَةً

وَمَنْ لَمْ يَذُقْ مُرَّ التَّعَلُّمِ سَاعَةً

تَجَرَّعَ ذُلَّ الْجَهْلِ طُولَ حَيَاتِهِ

تَجَرَّعَ ذُلَّ الْجَهْلِ طُولَ حَيَاتِهِ

Whoever does not taste the bitterness of learning for an hour

And whoever does not taste the bitterness of learning for an hour

will swallow the humiliation of ignorance throughout his life.

Will gulp down the humiliation of ignorance all his life.

وَمَنْ فَاتَهُ التَّعْلِيمُ وَقْتَ شَبَابِهِ

وَمَنْ فَاتَهُ التَّعْلِيمُ وَقْتَ شَبَابِهِ

فَكَبِّرْ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعًا لِوَفَاتِهِ

فَكَبِّرْ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعًا لِوَفَاتِهِ

Whoever misses education in the days of his youth—

And whoever misses education in his youth—

pronounce over him the four takbirs of the funeral prayer.

Then proclaim 'God is greatest' four times over him, for he has died.

وَذَاتُ الْفَتَى وَاللهِ بِالْعِلْمِ وَالتُّقَى

وَذَاتُ الْفَتَى وَاللهِ بِالْعِلْمِ وَالتُّقَى

إِذَا لَمْ يَكُونَا لَا اعْتِبَارَ لِذَاتِهِ

إِذَا لَمْ يَكُونَا لَا اعْتِبَارَ لِذَاتِهِ

A young man’s true worth, by God, lies in knowledge and piety;

And a young man's worth, by God, lies in knowledge and piety.

if he possesses neither, his person is of no account.

If both are absent, his person is of no account.
