وَعَينُand the eye الرِضاapproval عَنregarding كُلِّevery عَيبٍfault كَليلَةٌdim-sighted
وَلَكِنَّand yet عَينَthe eye السُخطِdispleasure تُبديreveals المَساوِياflaws
And the eye of approval is blind to every fault,
The eye of contentment is blind to every flaw,
and yet the eye of displeasure reveals flaws.
Yet the eye of displeasure reveals all defects.
وَلَستُand I am not بِهَيّابٍfearful لِمَنof one who لاnot يَهابُنيfears me
وَلَستُand I am not أَرىI recognize لِلمَرءِfor a man ماwhat لاnot يَرىhe recognizes لِياfor me
And I do not fear one who does not fear me,
I do not fawn on those who do not fear me,
nor do I accord a man what he does not accord me.
Nor do I expect from others what I do not expect from myself.
فَإِنso if تَدنُyou draw near مِنّيto me تَدنُdraws near مِنكَto you مَوَدَّتيmy affection
وَإِنand if تَنأَyou draw away عَنّيfrom me تَلقَنيyou will find me عَنكَfrom you نائِياdistant
So if you draw near to me, my affection draws near to you,
If you draw near me, you will find my affection,
and if you draw away from me, you will find me distant from you.
Yet if you shun me, you will find me keeping my distance.
كِلاناboth of us غَنيٌّindependent عَنof أَخيهِhis brother حَياتَهُthroughout his life
وَنَحنُand we إِذاwhen مِتناwe die أَشَدُّmore تَغانِياmutual independence
Each of us has no need of his brother throughout his life,
We can both live without needing one another,
and when we die, we need one another even less.
Yet when dead, we cling to one another tightly.
