Indeed, a man who has found wealth but earned no
A man found ease but rendered not thanks nor praise to the Unaided.
praise or thanks is surely not blessed with success.
Effort draws near each far-off thing, each locked door opens to strive.
الْجَدُّgood fortune يُدْنِيbrings near كُلَّevery أَمْرٍmatter شَاسِعٍfar-off
وَالْجَدُّand good fortune يَفْتَحُopens كُلَّevery بَابٍdoor مُغْلَقِlocked
Good fortune brings every distant goal within reach,
When you hear that a seeker of water came thirsty to a full pool yet its wristlet was tied, seek you into the matter.
and good fortune opens every locked door.
Truest of right to sorrow is he whose high heart ever walks anxious and straitened in wealth.
وَإِذَاand if سَمِعْتَyou heard بِأَنَّthat مَكْدُودًاa toil-worn man أَتَىcame

And if you hear that a toil-worn man came
And of destiny's proofs is the comfort of fools and discomfort of wise and polite.
to water to drink it, but it sank away, believe it.
وَأَحَقُّand most entitled خَلْقِcreatures of اللهِGod بِالْهَمِّto grief امْرُؤٌa man
ذُوpossessed of هِمَّةٍhigh ambition يُبْلَىis afflicted بِعَيْشٍwith a livelihood ضَيِّقِstraitened
And among God's creatures, the one with most cause for grief is a man
of lofty ambition, afflicted with straitened means.
وَمِنَand among الدَّلِيلِthe evidence عَلَىfor الْقَضَاءِdestiny وَكَوْنِهِand its existence

And one proof that destiny exists
is the wise man's misery and the fool's pleasant life.
