Was Ali not the first believer,

And the first to pray as a boy and affirm God's oneness?

He never ceased going secretly, evening and morning,

Ascending Thawr or Hira, climbing upward.

He prayed and invoked his Lord, knowing Him,

With the Chosen One—a pair, though he was peerless—

For three years after five, and months besides.

Like one steadfast in worship, he prayed before reaching adolescence.

And who was it who spent the night upon his bed,

And drew the Chosen One's pillow near and pillowed his head,

And covered his own face with his coverlet,

To shield him from the schemes of the craftiest?

When a glimmering dawn appeared, there cleared away

Before it shreds of darkness, pitch-black in hue.

And their guards circled him, searching for him,

And the day before, the Prophet had neither reviled nor threatened.

They came upon a pure man, while the good, pure one had gone

To the cave, fearing he might be assailed there.

So they meant to kill him, and had already struck out

With their hands, blows that raised him up and knocked him down.

    على بابه سَدَّى ووشَّى فجوَّدا

    A spider, for his sake, turned them back from his cave;

At its door it spun and embroidered, perfecting its work.

Then the people's leader said, 'There is nothing to seek inside.'

And the All-Merciful let no hand of theirs seize him.

And he favored certain men of Quraysh by building

Rooms for them within it, and he was rightly guided.

Then he was told, 'Close every door you have opened,

Except the door of Ali, the God-fearing.' So he closed the rest.
