The son of Hind ruled, and the son of Arwa before him,

a reign whose undoing was entrusted to firm resolve.

He added that to Yazid, and his rule

is a sin upon him among humankind, and wanton insolence.

May God disgrace the sons of Umayya, for they

wronged the people by what they did, and faltered.

    والنجمُ يَسقُطُ والجدودُ تَنامُ

    Their fortunes slept, and their star was brought down;

the star falls, and fortunes sleep.

The women of Umayya's sons were left widowed by their loss,

and their sons are orphans, abandoned.

Umayya was distraught at Hashim's rule

and wept—and Islam had already wept because of them.

If they are distraught, a turn of fortune has indeed come upon them,

and through it the days turn against them.

And for them, each month becomes many months,

and each single year, many years.

O clan of Ahmad, surely He who bestowed on you—

and with Him you have increase and fulfillment—

restored inheritance and the caliphate among you,

    while the sons of Umayya are abased in the dust;

He will surely complete for you what He bestowed,

and with Him you have a visit and fulfillment.

You are the sons of the Prophet's uncle; upon you,

from the Lord of Majesty, greetings and peace.

    إن الولاءَ تَحوزُه الأرحامُ

    And you inherited from him, and had the greater claim to him;

indeed, allegiance is claimed by ties of blood.

I have always known your merit, and you have been loved

by my heart for it, even when I was a boy.

I am hurt and reviled for your sake, and there comes to me

from my kin estrangement and reproach,

until I reached the age of gray hair, and now

my locks are like white thagham grass.
