فقالَ له قد كان عيسى بنُ مريمٍ

فقالَ له قد كان عيسى بنُ مريمٍ

بزعمك يُحيي كلَّ مَيْتٍ ومُقْبَرِ

بزعمك يُحيي كلَّ مَيْتٍ ومُقْبَرِ

So he said to him, “Jesus, son of Mary, indeed used to

Jesus son of Mary, as you claim

Revive every dead and buried person, as you claim.

Could revive every corpse and grave

فماذا الذي أُعطيتَ قال محمدٍ

فماذا الذي أُعطيتَ قال محمدٍ

لمثلِ الذي أُعطيه إنْ شئتَ فانظِرِ

لمثلِ الذي أُعطيه إنْ شئتَ فانظِرِ

What, then, have you been given?” Muhammad said,

So what is it that was given to you, Muhammad asked

“The like of what he was given. If you wish, then look

Like what was given to him, if you wish then look

إلى مثلِ ما أعطي فقالوا لكفرِهم

إلى مثلِ ما أعطي فقالوا لكفرِهم

إلا أرِنا ما قلتَ غيرَ مُعذَّرِ

إلا أرِنا ما قلتَ غيرَ مُعذَّرِ

At the like of what he was given.” In their unbelief, they said,

At the like of what I was given, so they said in their disbelief

“But show us what you said, with no excuse allowed.”

Show us what you say, no more excuses

فقال رسولُ الله قمْ لوصيِّه

فقال رسولُ الله قمْ لوصيِّه

فقامَ وقِدماً كانَ غيرَ مُقَصِّرِ

فقامَ وقِدماً كانَ غيرَ مُقَصِّرِ

Then God’s Messenger said to his appointed successor, “Rise.”

So the Messenger of Allah said, arise for his successor

So he rose; he had long been one who never fell short.

So he stood though his legs were not weak

وردّاه بالمِنجابِ والله خَصّه

وردّاه بالمِنجابِ والله خَصّه

وقال اتبعوهُ بالدعاء المبرَّرِ

وقال اتبعوهُ بالدعاء المبرَّرِ

And he draped him in the mantle; God had favored him

And he called him with the honoured prayer, and Allah granted him distinction

With the blessed invocation; and he said, “Follow him.”

And said follow him with the blessed prayer

فلمّا أتى ظَهرَ البقيعِ دعا بهِ

فلمّا أتى ظَهرَ البقيعِ دعا بهِ

فَرَجَّت قُبورٌ بالوَرى لم تُغَيَّرِ

فَرَجَّت قُبورٌ بالوَرى لم تُغَيَّرِ

When he reached the open ground of al-Baqīʿ, he offered that prayer.

So when he came to the Baqee graveyard, he called upon it

Then graves shook with people who had not been changed.

And the tombs of the land that were unchanged split open

فقالوا له يا وارثَ العلم أعفِنا

فقالوا له يا وارثَ العلم أعفِنا

ومُنَّ علينا بالرّضى منك واغفِرِ

ومُنَّ علينا بالرّضى منك واغفِرِ

So they said to him, “O heir to knowledge, spare us,

So they said to him, O heir of knowledge forgive us

And grant us your favor, and forgive us.”

And favour us with your pleasure and forgive
