وصفتُ لك الحوضَ يا ابنَ الحُصين

وصفتُ لك الحوضَ يا ابنَ الحُصين

على صفةِ الحارثِ الأعورِ

I have described the Pool to you, O son of al-Ḥuṣayn,

I described the pond to you, O son of Al-Hussein

according to al-Ḥārith al-Aʿwar’s description.

In the manner of Al-Harith the one-eyed

فإنْ تُسقَ منه غَداً شُربةً

فإنْ تُسقَ منه غَداً شُربةً

تَفُزْ من نَصيبِكَ بالأوفرِ

تَفُزْ من نَصيبِكَ بالأوفرِ

So if tomorrow you are given a draught from it,

So if you drink from it tomorrow a draught

you will gain the fullest measure of your share.

You will gain more than your share

فما ليَ ذنبٌ سوى أنّني

فما ليَ ذنبٌ سوى أنّني

ذكرتُ الذي فرَّ عن خَيبَرِ

For I have no fault, except that I

I mentioned a man who fled from Marḥab

I mentioned a man who fled from Mirhab

as a donkey flees from a lion.

Like a donkey flees from a lion

فأنكرَ ذاك جليسٌ لكمْ

فأنكرَ ذاك جليسٌ لكمْ

زنيمٌ أخو خُلُقٍ أعورِ

زنيمٌ أخو خُلُقٍ أعورِ

Then a companion of yours objected to that—

But a boon companion of yours denied that

a bastard, a man of warped character.

A despicable man of evil character

لَحاني بحبِّ إمامِ الهُدى

لَحاني بحبِّ إمامِ الهُدى

وفاروقِ أمّتِنا الأكبرِ

وفاروقِ أمّتِنا الأكبرِ

He reproached me for loving the Imam of Guidance

He insulted me with love for the Imam of guidance

and our community’s greatest discerner of truth from falsehood.

And the greatest viceroy of our nation

سأحلقُ لحيتَه إنّها

سأحلقُ لحيتَه إنّها

شُهودٌ على الزُّورِ والمُنْكَرِ

شُهودٌ على الزُّورِ والمُنْكَرِ

I shall shave off his beard, for it

I will shave his beard, for it

bears witness to falsehood and wrongdoing.
