قد ضيّع اللهُ ما جمّعتُ من أدبٍ

قد ضيّع اللهُ ما جمّعتُ من أدبٍ

بين الحميرِ وبين الشاءِ والبقرِ

بين الحميرِ وبين الشاءِ والبقرِ

God has indeed wasted the learning I have gathered,

God has wasted what refinement I brought forth

Among the donkeys, the sheep, and the cattle.

Between the donkeys, sheep, and cows.

لا يسمعونَ إلى قول أجيءُ بهِ

لا يسمعونَ إلى قول أجيءُ بهِ

وكيفَ تَستمعُ الأنعامُ للبَشَرِ

وكيفَ تَستمعُ الأنعامُ للبَشَرِ

They do not listen to any words I bring forth;

They do not listen to any words I say,

And how can livestock listen to humans?

How can beasts attend to man?

أقولُ ما سَكتوا إنسٌ فإن نَطقوا

أقولُ ما سَكتوا إنسٌ فإن نَطقوا

قلتُ الضفادعُ بين الماء والشَّجَرِ

قلتُ الضفادعُ بين الماء والشَّجَرِ

As long as they are silent, I say, 'Humans'; but if they speak,

I say what men were silent over; if they speak,

I say, 'Frogs between the water and the trees.'

I am but frogs ‘twixt water and trees.
