Behold, Hind came to us when the caravan rested
And a fearsome phantom of me wandered to her.
And an alarming fantasy of her came to me

I wondered how she walked in the darkness of night
The darkness of night, while night scowled, dark-faced?
While the night was gloomy, bleak and dark

How had she found the caravan, as the caravan lay encamped
How did she find the way to the caravan while it was halted
Where birds linger by day and wild beasts graze?
In a place where even the beasts and birds do not roam

I had known her to fear the sound of her own footsteps,
I knew her to be timid of the sound of her own steps
And to start at her own shadow among the secluded chambers.
And to panic amidst the dwellings

So I said: Welcome, O Hind, greetings
And spent my night taking pleasure in her,
And I remained enjoying my night with her

With an embrace and kisses upon her soft neck
And sweet embraces in which there was no resistance.
And the sweetness of an unrestrained caress

And kiss her lips, fragrant as spreading musk.
And kissed from her lips like musk exhaling fragrance

Until the hateful face of dawn appeared!
Drew a face from which ugliness exudes

And knew that I had been deceived in sleep.
Knowing I had been deluded in my dream

Whose heart almost splits for yearning

And comes morning without hope of a glance from you.
And wakes with no hopeful glance from you to aspire to

Oh, would that I know! Can one like me have
A path—or, if not, a turning back from love?
Any way to you, or is there any escape from love?

Yes! In the love of the Prophet's family
One like me finds elevation beyond loving you, and contentment.
Is hope for the likes of me and sufficiency

Indeed, the true servant and believer
Is, in truth, only the man who embraces Shiism.
Is he who professes loyalty to them

"Peace! This is the most eminent man of mankind."

Other than him, while the sun of the Gathering scorches my face?
On the Day when the Sun blazes faces?

That is the Prince of the Faithful, and whoever possesses
Virtues could scarcely be gathered in a single creature.
Merits that can hardly be combined in any other

He is valiant, walking with sword, to the people of Badr
Toward the men of Badr, while spearheads are pulled free.

Wearing ornaments of flashing, keen-edged swords.

Stand firm except a steadfast, awe-inspiring man.
Except the sturdy, awestriking lion

Cutting them with a sword like none forged by Indian smiths
