من فضله أنّه قد كان أوّلَ مَن

صلّى وآمنَ بالرحمن إذ كفروا

Among his merits is that he was indeed the first to

For his virtue, he was the first one who

pray and believe in the Most Merciful when they disbelieved,

Prayed and believed in the Merciful when they disbelieved

سنينَ سبعاً وأيّاماً محرَّمةً

سنينَ سبعاً وأيّاماً محرَّمةً

مع النبيِّ على خوفٍ وما شَعروا

مع النبيِّ على خوفٍ وما شَعروا

for seven years and sacred days,

For seven years and sacred days

with the Prophet, in fear, while they were unaware.

With the Prophet, in fear, though they were unaware

ويوم قال له جبريلُ قد علموا

ويوم قال له جبريلُ قد علموا

أنذر عشيرَتَكَ الأدْنَين إن بَصْروا

أنذر عشيرَتَكَ الأدْنَين إن بَصْروا

And on the day Gabriel said to him—as they knew—

And the day Gabriel told him, they now knew

“Warn your nearest kin”—if they had insight—

Warn your closest tribe, if they see

فقام يدعوهُم من دونِ أمّتهِ

فقام يدعوهُم من دونِ أمّتهِ

فما تخلّف عنهُ منهمُ بَشَرُ

فما تخلّف عنهُ منهمُ بَشَرُ

he rose to summon them, apart from the rest of his community,

So he called them, apart from his nation

and none of them stayed away from him.

None of them failed to respond

فمنهم آكلٌ في مجلسٍ جَذَعاً

فمنهم آكلٌ في مجلسٍ جَذَعاً

وشاربٌ مثل عَسٍّ وهو مُحْتَضَرُ

وشاربٌ مثل عَسٍّ وهو مُحْتَضَرُ

Among them was one who could eat a young sheep at a sitting,

Among them, a glutton in a sitting ate greedily

and one who drank a large bowlful set before him.

And a drinker drank like a camel, on his deathbed

فصدّهم عن نواحي قَصعةٍ شبعاً

فصدّهم عن نواحي قَصعةٍ شبعاً

فيها من الحَبِّ صاعٌ فوقه الوَذرُ

فيها من الحَبِّ صاعٌ فوقه الوَذرُ

So he turned them, sated, from the sides of a serving bowl

He distracted them from the sides of a satiated bowl

holding a saʿ of grain, with pieces of meat on top.

In which was a sa` of seeds atop the chaff

فقال يا قوم إنّ اللهَ أرسلني

فقال يا قوم إنّ اللهَ أرسلني

إليكمُ فأجيبوا اللهَ وادّرِكوا

إليكمُ فأجيبوا اللهَ وادّرِكوا

He said, “My people, God has sent me

So he said, "O people, God has sent me

to you; so respond to God and catch up.

To you, so respond to God, and realize

فأيّكم يَجتبي قولي ويؤمنُ بي

فأيّكم يَجتبي قولي ويؤمنُ بي

أنّي نبيٌّ رسولٌ فانبرى غَدِرُ

أنّي نبيٌّ رسولٌ فانبرى غَدِرُ

Which of you will embrace my words and believe in me,

Which of you will choose my words and believe in me

that I am a prophet and messenger?” Then a treacherous man stepped forward,

That I am a prophet and messenger?" and treacherous Ghadir arose

فقال تَبّاً أتدعونا لِتلفِتَنا

فقال تَبّاً أتدعونا لِتلفِتَنا

عن ديِننا ثم قام القومُ فاشتَمروا

عن ديِننا ثم قام القومُ فاشتَمروا

and said, “Perish! Do you call us to turn us

Saying, "Away! Do you call us to distract us

from our religion?” Then the people rose and hurried off.

From our religion?" Then the people stood up and put on their robes

مَن الذي قال منهم وهو أحدثهم

مَن الذي قال منهم وهو أحدثهم

سنّاً وخيرُهم في الذكر إذ سَطَروا

سنّاً وخيرُهم في الذكر إذ سَطَروا

Who among them said—he was their youngest

Who was it that said among them, though he was the youngest of them

in age, and the best of them in the records they wrote—

In years and the best of them in memory when they wrote

آمنتُ باللهِ قد أُعطيتُ نافِلةً

آمنتُ باللهِ قد أُعطيتُ نافِلةً

لم يُعْطَها أحد جنٌّ ولا بَشَرُ

لم يُعْطَها أحد جنٌّ ولا بَشَرُ

“I believe in God—I have indeed been granted an added blessing

"I believe in God, I have been given supererogation

given to no one, neither jinn nor human—

That has not been given to any jinn or human

وأن ما قلتَه حقٌّ وأنّهم

وأن ما قلتَه حقٌّ وأنّهم

إن لم يُجيبوا فقد خانوا وقد خَسِروا

إن لم يُجيبوا فقد خانوا وقد خَسِروا

and that what you said is true, and that they,

And that what you have said is truth, and they

if they do not respond, have betrayed and have lost”?

If they do not respond, have betrayed and lost"

ففازَ قِدماً بها واللهُ أكرَمُهُ

ففازَ قِدماً بها واللهُ أكرَمُهُ

وكان سبّاقَ غاياتٍ إذا ابتَدَروا

وكان سبّاقَ غاياتٍ إذا ابتَدَروا

Thus he won it long ago, and God honored him,

So he succeeded in attaining it, and God honored him

and he was first to the finish whenever they raced.

For he was the fore runner of goals when they competed
