The companions departed, so my tears
The mixture sparkled, so my tears
pour forth in longing for them.
Poured out in sorrow for them all.

قfinal letter of 'parting' عنfrom المنازلthe dwellings فاستقلواso they set off
And parting’s camel-driver sang them onward
Alone I bid the horsemen there
away from the dwellings, so they set off.
To leave and journey on their way.

Say to those who departed
Say to those travelers who have moved
from my sight, yet settled in my heart,
Beyond my sight, whose absence fills

تI (verb ending) غداةon the morning of بينهمtheir parting استحلواthey deemed lawful
and my blood—though I had committed no crime—
My heart, though blameless was my blood
they deemed lawful to shed the morning of their parting:
Shed where at dawn they thought to kill,

منfrom ماءwater وصلهمtheir union وعلواand gave a second drink
What harm would it have done them had they given me a first draught
No harm had come to them if they
from the water of their union, and then a second?
Had stopped to drink, then ridden on.
