1. قل للظباء بذي الأرا

    ك إذا مررت بهن جائز

    Tell the gazelles at Dhu al-Arak,

    when you pass them on your way:

  2. ألكن قتل العاشقي

    ن محلل في الشرع جائز

    Is the killing of lovers, for you,

    lawful and permitted by religious law?

  3. أوعدتم فوفيتم

    والوعد منكم غير ناجز

    You threatened, and fulfilled your threats,

    yet your promise remains unfulfilled.

  4. إن الذي رحل الخلي

    ط بقلبه وأقام عاجز

    Indeed, he whose companions departed

    with his heart, while he stayed behind, is helpless.

  5. ألا تجشم في هواه

    أثرهمو قطع المفاوز

    Why did he not, in his passion, brave

    the crossing of desert wastes in their wake,

  6. حتى يظل يجيبه

    قلقا ويمسي الطرف غامز

    till he spent the day traversing their trail,

    restless, his eye blinking by evening?

  7. أترى متى أنا منكم

    بوصالكم يا فوز فائز

    When, do you think, shall I, from you,

    win union with you, O Fawz?

  8. ولقد خلوت بها وأب

    عدت العذارى والعجائز

    Indeed, I was alone with her and sent

    the maidens and old women away,

  9. ليلاً فكان عفافنا

    ما بيننا والصون حاجز

    at night; our chastity was

    what stood between us, and restraint a barrier.

  10. حاشا صحيح الحب يو

    ماً أن يقام مقام ماعز

    Far be it that one true in love should ever

    be put in Ma'iz's place.
