She sent her servant to me, having

Seen the cord of love severed,

Pitying me for an imminent departure

That ravaged us, and a parting that wronged us.

    فادرع صبرك أو مت كرما

    And saying, “Patience is the surest shield;

So don your patience as armor, or die nobly.

    لست في أهل الهوى متهما

    And take a glance as provision to live by;

You are beyond suspicion among lovers.”

I said, “My provision is an ice-chilled draught

From your front teeth, for thirst has touched me.

So grant it to me, O cousin,

And make your mouth its pitcher.”

Then she brimmed with anger [reading uncertain] and veiled herself,

With a modesty that increased my body's sickness.

Then she said, “Our friend, you used to be,

Before this, modest in our company.

Indeed, the robe of propriety and chastity is

An inviolable barrier to what you seek from us.

    After today, only our phantom

Will ride the night when it grows dark.”

I said, “O you, suppose the phantom journeys by night—

Does a phantom visit anyone but sleepers [reading uncertain]?”
