    فإن الخليط غداً منطلق

    Awake from your passion—or do not awake;

    for the companions will depart tomorrow.

    And quench with your tears the fire in your breast,

    if you can—or leave it to burn.

    فقد ذاق منه الذي لم تذق

    And learn from your brother the tale of love;

    for he has tasted of it what you have not tasted.

    And if you deny the effect of passion

    on lovers, ask one who has loved.

    And a woman said, while the crow of parting

    had cawed of the severing of our bond:

    "Take provisions, if only a kiss, before

    your streaming tears betray us.

    And take a small parting token before farewell,

    for your pledge in our camp is now forfeit."

    ن على الجفن بعدهم ينطلق

    They departed, having grudgingly kept the tears pent up;

    upon the eyelid, after them, they flow free.

    What harm would it have done their camel-driver—may he receive no water

    from a raincloud in his thirst!—had he shown kindness?

    And I was content, in place of union with them,

    with a phantom vision whenever it visited by night,

    even though in the two cheeks' laughter

    with gray hair there was an admonisher for me, not to be defied.
