Your clouds pour steadily in generosity,

and your fire blazes fiercely among the enemy.

The rain of your two hands, whenever they flow, is life

that you spread throughout creation—or death.

From your left hand pour forth deaths,

and from your right hand pour forth rainclouds.

We have known you as a man of vengeance, yet

you are generous: in you are bounty and revenge.

If one day the might of God grows fierce

against a people, you are His keen sword.

Resolve hurled you against the Romans' towering heights—

it is daybreak whenever darkness looms.

    يَشُقُّ على الجنائبِ ما تُسامُ

    So you halted amid them with marked steeds;

the demands laid on them tax even the spare mounts.

They once were refuges for them, but now

not even mountain goats find refuge there.

You looked upon the fortresses there, and they fell,

    as tents fall when dismantled.

And when they bore you onto the plain, with raised

    reins, like death swooping down—

    they had been white-marked, until

blood and battle-dust covered their blazes—

you scattered heads along the gulf until

the gulf's pebbles seemed necks and heads.

Greatness far beyond reach, and glory

too exalted for any hero even to aspire to,

and deeds over which the nights pass

while they remain beauty marks upon the brows of Time,

belong to a mighty lion whose year in peace is a day,

but whose day in war is a year.

Whoever opposes him throws prudence away, until

he spends the night with no belt fastened about him.

He keeps him sleepless and hastens on his night march

toward him, allowing no sleep and taking none.

You swore by what the tall lances built for you

of honor that can suffer no affront,

and by two lightning flashes in your right hand: one

is watched for rain; the other is never sheathed,

that you would surely destroy the enemies' grazing herds

with a gallant warrior whose own herds are never alarmed,

who marches at noon, with spears for shade above him,

and bares his face, with battle-dust for his veil,

and with a clamorous host in which deserts lose their way,

and shallow pools and hillocks vanish.

Its edges lie far apart, so earth conceals

multitudes, and the sky is its canopy.

and the banners quarrel with the wind.

We have settled, never leaving; peace has been made with us

by calamities in your court, so we are not assailed.

So all our time is forever spring,

and all our months are the sacred month.

May your ransom be one whose virtues are stars

that shine, and one whose gifts are immense.

how could I say, "May the base ransom you"?

but shrank back from your reach, noble though they are.

before you, though mankind recites it to one another?

I have a poem in your praise that makes other rhymes worthless

when it is recited, and all speech is held cheap.

and arrows fall short of where it strikes.

    تُحَثُّ بها المَطايا والمُدامُ

    A singer and a camel-chanter have vied to plunder its beauty;

by it, mounts and wine alike are urged onward.

    Your favors are immense, yet

my being near and close to you would complete them.

And my honor is to stand before a king

before whom the kings of all the world stand,

and to be summoned whenever I craft a poem,

so you may hear what I craft. And peace.
