1. هل لك يا ابن غاليه

    في قهوة وشاديه

    Would you care, Ibn Ghāliya,

    for wine and a singing girl,

  2. وفي كروم جمة

    قطوفهن دانيه

    and plentiful vineyards,

    their clusters hanging within reach,

  3. ونرجس كأنه

    شهل العيون رانيه

    and narcissus, as though it were

    gray-blue eyes gazing,

  4. وشادن عارضه

    مزور بغاليه

    and a young gazelle whose cheek

    is painted with ghāliya perfume,

  5. ذي مقلة سهامها

    من القلوب داميه

    with an eye whose arrows

    are stained with hearts’ blood,

  6. ساق غرير يمزج ال

    كأس لنا من ساقيه

    a guileless cupbearer who mixes the

    cup for us with water from a stream,

  7. وفتية إن ثملوا

    تناولوا معاويه

    and young men who, when drunk,

    assail Muʿāwiya,

  8. ومزقوا ثلاثة

    من قبله علانيه

    and tear three to shreds

    who came before him, openly?

  9. فإن أطعت أمرهم

    لبست درعا ضافيه

    So if you obey their command,

    you will don a full-length coat of mail.

  10. كف عن القول ولا

    تكفره يا ابن الزانيه

    Hold your tongue, and do not

    reject it, you son of a whore.

  11. فإن توليت قفت

    إثرك منهم قافيه

    But if you turn away, there will follow

    at your heels a rhyme from them;

  12. وما على عرضك مما

    ينظمون واقيه

    nor is there, for your honor, against what

    they compose, any shield.
