تُحَفٌtreasures أغضُّfresher منthan الرِّياضِgardens شمائِلاin qualities
When the garden has grown withered, I have
When the garden wilts, it blooms again
treasures fresher in their charms than gardens.
More verdant than meadows, gentle and green
خُرسٌmute تُحدِّثُtell أخراًthose who come later عنabout أوَّلٍthose who came before
بعجائبٍof marvels سلَفتْthat have passed ولسْنَand they are not أوائِلاthe first
Mute, they tell those who come later of those who came before,
With wonders of old tales newly told
of bygone marvels, though they are not themselves the first.
Of events passed, scenes now to unfold
سُقِيَتْwere watered بأطرافِby the tips of اليَراعِreed pens ظُهورُهاtheir backs
وبطونُهاand their insides طَلاًdew أجمَّcopious ووابِلاand pouring rain
Their backs have been watered by the tips of reed pens,
Watered at the meadow’s edge,
and their insides with copious dew and pouring rain.
Their backs are sated, their bellies a wedge
تلقاكَthey meet you فيin حُمرِred ones الثِّيابِgarments وسُودِهاand their black ones
فَتَخَالُهُنَّso you take them for عرائساًbrides وثَواكِلاand bereaved mothers
They meet you in garments red and black,
Of burgeoning clouds, rain in store
so you take them for brides and bereaved mothers.
To greet you in reds, in blacks galore
وتُريكَand they show you ماwhat قَدalready فاتَhas passed منof دَهرٍan age مضَىgone by
حتىuntil تَراهyou see it بعينِwith the eye of فِكرِكyour thought ماثِلاstanding before you
And they show you what has gone by in an age now past,
You’d think them brides in their gowns anew
until you see it standing before your mind's eye.
As if the past returned to you
وإذاand when خلوتَyou are alone بهنَّwith them ظمآنَthirsty الحَشاthe heart
مَنَحتكَthey grant you منfrom صَوبِthe rainfall of العُقولِminds مَناهِلاwatering places
And when you are alone with them, thirsty at heart,
Alone, their minds quench your thirst
they offer you watering places fed by the rain of minds.
With founts of wisdom as you immerse
ولَهاand they have إذاwhen حُلَّتthey are unbound نتاجُoffspring of غرائبٍmarvels

يَمكُثنَthey remain ماas long as زُرَّتare buttoned shut بهِنَّaround them حَوامِلاpregnant
And when unbound, they give birth to marvels;
With child, still graced in strange attire
they remain pregnant as long as their covers are clasped shut.
As if clothed in gossamer, liquid fire
يَلبَسنَthey wear أرديةَmantles of الأديمِleather كأنّماas though
رَقْرَقتَyou poured فيهِنinto them الخَلوقَsaffron perfume السَّائِلاliquid
They wear mantles of leather, as though
A touch betrays their hands’ perfume
you had poured liquid saffron perfume into them.
Fingers eased, in rest consumed
فإذاso when مَددتَyou extend لهاtoward them يمينَكَyour right hand فاتحاًopening them

So when you stretch your right hand toward them to open them,
Their gardens multiply in kind
your right hand grows fragrant, palm and fingertips.
Adorned in brocade, jewels designed

حُللاًrobes مدبَّجةًembroidered وحَلْياًand ornaments كَامِلاcomplete
Their gardens spread upon their counterparts
A garden the minds embellish; a bower
richly embroidered robes and a full array of ornaments.
The rain and clouds devour

A garden adorned by minds, and a garden
Two regiments clash with reason and wit
that pouring rains have adorned through the night.
In battle, intelligence rules every bit

حَرباًa war يَسُلُّunsheathes بهاin it الذَّكاءُintelligence مَناصِلاswords
And two battalions, Zanj and Romans, have kindled
War’s arena with no blood or life taken
a war in which intelligence unsheathes swords,
As if shedding ink, lines forsaken

on a battlefield whose spaces combat has divided
You see two warriors charge ahead
into stations among the marked warriors.
One advancing, one impeded
لمnot يَسفَحاthey both spilled فيهin it دماًblood وكأنَّماand as though
رَشَحاthey both oozed الدماءَblood أعالياًabove وأسافِلاand below
They have spilled no blood there, yet it is as though
Some cry out as they march in line
they had oozed blood above and below.
Others waver, ranks inclined
يُبديreveals لعينِكto your eye كلَّماwhenever عاينتَهyou look at it

قِرنَينtwo rivals جَالاَboth maneuvered مُقدِماًone advancing وَمُخاتِلاand one feinting
Whenever you look at it, it reveals to your eye
Marvel at war, with men aroused
two rivals maneuvering, one advancing and one feinting.
No commoners, only virtuosos
فكأنَّso it is as though ذاthis one صاحٍsober يَسيرُwalks مُقوَّماًstraight
وكأنَّand it is as though ذاthat one نَشْوانُdrunk يَخطِرُstruts مائِلاat a slant
So this one seems sober, walking straight,
Judges of human nature they may be
and that one drunk, strutting at a slant.
But seldom judge with equity
أَعجِبْmarvel بِهاat it حرباًas a war تُثيِرُbrings out إذاwhen التظَتit blazes
فَضلَthe excellence of الرِّجالmen ولاand does not تُثِيرُraise قساطِلاdust clouds
Marvel at this war: when it blazes, it brings out
Two brothers both scarred in their own way
men's excellence, but raises no clouds of dust.
Inciting the fool to passion’s sway
ومُحكَّمانِand two appointed arbiters علىover النُفوسِsouls وربَّماand sometimes
لمnot يَحكُماthey both judged فيهِنَّupon them حُكماًa judgment عادِلاjust
And two arbiters over souls, who sometimes
To one fortunate, their aspect is bright
fail to pass a just judgment on them.
To one afflicted, their power takes flight
أخَوَانِtwo brothers قدalready وَسَماboth inscribed علىupon مَتْنَيهِماtheir two backs

Two brothers have inscribed upon their backs
Together, they enrich a youth inspired
a mark that spurs misfortunes against the dull-witted.
Or harm him, lessons acquired
يلقاهماmeets them both المسعودُthe fortunate سَعداًa lucky star طالعاًrising
ويراهماand sees them both المَنحوسُthe unlucky سعداًa lucky star آفِلاsetting
The fortunate meets them as a rising lucky star,
A spectrum of wine that meets the eye
and the unlucky sees them as a lucky star setting.
Is the joy of souls made plenary
فإذاso when هماthey both اصطحَباcome together علىon كَفِّthe palm of الفَتىthe young man

ضَرَّاهthey both harm him أوor مَنحَاهthey both grant him نَفعاًbenefit عاجلاًimmediate
So when the two come together on a young man's palm,
Like brides arrayed in scents composed
they harm him or grant him an immediate gain.
Just distinguished by garlands disclosed
وصُنوفُand varieties of أَنبِذَةٍfermented drinks إذاwhen عاينَتهاyou behold them
عاينتَyou behold أفراحَjoys of النُفوسِsouls كَوامِلاcomplete
And varieties of wine: when you behold them,
The fullest goblet held up high
you behold the joys of souls in their fullness.
None match it, green with envy they vie
مثلُlike العَرائسِbrides ماnever اجتُلينَthey are unveiled رَوائحاًgoing forth at evening
إلاّexcept اخْتَلَفْنَthey differ قَلائِداًin necklaces وغَلائِلاand fine gowns
Like brides, never are they unveiled at evening
Figures made lasting, preserved in their prime
without differing in necklaces and fine gowns.
Bodies green, souls shielded by time
وأغنُّand a nasal-voiced youth قَدَّحَsparked عارضاهُhis two cheek-whiskers فلاَوَذَاthen both took cover
واخضَرَّand turned green شاربُهhis mustache فسارso it advanced مقابِلاfacing
And a nasal-voiced youth, whose cheek-whiskers sparked, then took cover,
Whitening the days of privation in calm
while his mustache turned green and advanced to confront them.
Reddening riotous days, refusing harm

خُضراًgreen إذاwhen الأجسامُthe bodies كنَّwere عَواطِلاunadorned
from a company whose bodies' ornaments are fashioned
Boys conspire to break sacred law
green, even when their bodies wear no ornaments.
And become the murdered, not the outlaw
مُبيضَّturning white أيامِin days of العُقوبةِpunishment صابراًpatient
مُحمرَّturning red أيامِin days of الشَّطارةِroguery صائِلاattacking fiercely
White in days of punishment, patiently enduring,
I’ve pondered their wanton ways before
red in days of roguery, springing to attack.
And found them essentially hollow at core
يتذاكرُdiscuss together الفِتيانُthe youths كيفَhow يُحرِّمواthey might declare forbidden
فمضَواso they departed قتيلاًa slain man لاnot يُعابُis reproached وقَاتِلاand a slayer
The youths discuss how to declare things forbidden,
Rouse yourself, Abu Bakr, pursue desire
then go their ways, slain without reproach, and slayers.
Unfettered by doubt, boldly aspire
ولقَدand indeed تأملتُI pondered الشَّطارةَroguery قَبلَهbefore him
فَوَجَدْتُهاso I found it حقَّاًa truth يُسمَّىis called باطِلاfalsehood
And indeed, I had pondered roguery before him,
Join in wholesome drink for it confers
so I found it a truth called falsehood.
In your company joy that perseveres
فابكُرْso come early أباO father of بَكْرٍBakr فقدfor indeed بَكَرَcame early الهَوىَdesire

So come early, Abu Bakr, for desire has come early,
Your friendship contents me, hours sweet
smiling at my side, though it had been grim and fierce.
One like you makes bliss complete
وأَجِبْand respond إلىto شُربِdrinking الشَّمولِwine فإنّهاfor it

And answer the call to drink wine, for it
brings me all-encompassing joy through your nearness.
وكفاكَand sufficient for you بيin me خُلّاas a friend تَسُرُّbring delight خِلالُهhis qualities

And I suffice you as a friend whose qualities delight,
and one like you suffices as a helper and faithful companion.
