Try to remedy the arrow lodged in the heart's sheath—
The arrow lodged in the quiver will decay
and can redress save you from ruin?
No charm can guard you from time’s slow decay
تُذَكِّرُنيyou remind me of العَفافَrestraint وليسand is not هذاthis
أوانَthe time for العَفوِpardoning عنكyou ولاnor العَفافِrestraint
You remind me of restraint, but this is not
My chastity you recall but now’s no time
the time to pardon you, nor to show restraint.
For pardoning you nor guarding my chastity

And satire has flashed with shattering bolts,
Lampoons flash like lightning, cleaving the gloom
before which your spear-shaft threatens to snap.
Your trenches cringe before their swift doom

I carpeted the earth for you with its embers,
I strew embers to scorch your naked feet
which harm even the shod, while you are barefoot.
While you the shod one’s harm regret too late

And how can you obtain my kindness and my pardon,
How can you merit my grace and pardon
when you have not erased your admission with an admission?
If you don’t scrub your confession clean of lies

I see al-Jazzar has provoked me and turned away,
The butcher provoked me then turned to flee
and confronted me openly, hastening to expose me.
Exposing himself in his haste to escape

And he patched his poetry with the gems of mine,
He patched his verse with the eyes of my verse
thus mixing honey with deadly poison.
Mingling pure honey with bitter syrup
لقدindeed شَقَيِتْhave suffered بمِديَتِكَfrom your knife الأضاحيthe sacrificial animals

Indeed, the sacrificial animals have suffered under your knife,
My poems have suffered from your dull offerings
just as rhymes have suffered under your raid.
As rhymes suffered from your jarring singings

Their path grew rugged through you, though it is smooth,
Once smooth, her path is rocky where you walk
and their watering place was muddied through you, though it is clear.
Once bright, her roses darkened by your talk

You ravaged them, finely fashioned in every part,
You destroyed her, most cultured of all ladies
founded on thought truer than a spear-straightener.
With ignorance deeper than any learning

They have the fragrance of necks when unveiled
She has the finest conversational grace
to the ears, or the fragrance of choice wine.
Whether heard aloud or read on paper’s face

They unite both beauties, drawn from breezes
Beauty and spirit in blissful union
perfumed with ambergris and from light spirits.
Of gentle temper and gentle communion

Nor have they lacked a raider in you, who pelts
Never lacking some gadfly to sting her
their delicate nature with a coarse man's nature.
And ruffle the calm of her gentle nature

As though the beauties of poetry were a law
You treat the art of poetry like some whim
you make appealing—yet he came in opposition to it.
Stumbling through effort and ungainly attempts

وألفاظٌand words تُقَدُّare hewn منfrom الأثافيthe pot-supporting stones
Meanings borrowed from the darkest nights,
The poems cry out against your wrongs
and words hewn from hearthstones.
Is there one strong enough to right these wrongs
كأنَّكas though you are قاطفٌa gatherer منهاfrom it ثماراًfruit

As though you were gathering fruit from it,
You race but her lead was faster at the start You lag while her pace flowed strong and smart
others having beaten you to it at harvest time.
You boast your fame and glory loudly tolls

And the worst poetry is what a mind brings forth,
Yet the flash of the moment is blind to your goals
stumbling between toil and blind wandering.
Our disparity cannot be hidden from sight

The poems have indeed complained of oppression at your hands;
As the stellar from beggars in fortune’s light
so is there a capable protector to shield them from oppression?
Nobility comes from the scorn of villains
جَرَيْتَyou raced وطِرْفُهاwhile their noble steed السبَّاقُfleet جارٍwas running

You raced, while their fleet steed was running,
And crown jewel’s glitter from tinsel’s dullness
and you fell short, while their outstretched reach was ample.
You’ve been struck by floods of venomous lampoons
وتزعُمُand you claim أنَّكَthat you are المشهورُrenowned فَضْلاًfor excellence

فَلْمْthen why تَخفَىare you obscure وبَرقُwhile the lightning of الحَيْنِdoom خافيis hidden
And you claim that you are renowned for excellence;
Capable of drowning the driest buffoons
then why are you obscure, while the lightning of doom is hidden?
So constricted by you, this once wide, free space

We are far apart; can the primary feathers be indistinguishable
When I unleashed on you my cloak’s embrace
to the eyes' gaze from the covert feathers?

And the preeminence of heads comes from loathing tails,
I never improperly began this affair
and the crown's honor from the lowliness of patched sandals.
I answer abuse for abuse, and swear for swear

You were assailed by a deep flood of satire,
I’ll heal poetry of you in artful verse
which, when it overflows, drowns the man with mere drops.
Laboring long as for a jewel or hearse

And the wide expanse narrowed around you when
I’ll push you away, however hard I strain
I turned on you, my cloak flowing wide.
So stop behind me, refusing to remain

I do not initiate harm, but
repay with harm, or give like for like.

I will cure poetry of you by composing verse
that makes you spend the night as though on hearthstones;

and carry my goodwill as far from you as I can;
so stand, with goodwill toward me, beyond Qaf.
