اليوم يعذب ورد فيه تكدير
ويستفيدand benefits منfrom الهجرانabandonment مهجورone forsaken
ويستفيد من الهجران مهجور
Today the draught is sweet, though the day is clouded,
Today a muddied draught tastes sweet,
and even the forsaken gains from estrangement.
And one forsaken benefits from abandonment.
حثhasten الكؤوسthe cups فذاfor this يومa day بهin it قصرshortness
حث الكؤوس فذا يوم به قصر
وماand not بهin it عنfrom تمامperfection الحسنbeauty تقصيرfalling short
وما به عن تمام الحسن تقصير
Keep the cups in motion—for this is a short day,
Hasten the cups, for this day is short,
yet nothing in its perfect beauty falls short.
Yet it falls in no way short of perfect beauty.
صحوclear skies وغيمand clouds يروقdelights العينthe eye حسنهماthe beauty of them both
صحو وغيم يروق العين حسنهما
فالصحوfor the clear sky فيروزجturquoise والغيمand the clouds سمورsable fur
فالصحو فيروزج والغيم سمور
Clear sky and cloud—the beauty of both delights the eye:
Clear skies and clouds—their beauty delights the eye:
the clear is turquoise, and the cloud is sable.
For the clear sky is turquoise, and the clouds are sable fur.
