    أُجاهِدُها حتَّى أمَلَّ جِهادَها

    Time's calamities keep increasing their defiance;

I struggle against them until I weary of the struggle.

And time is but a stumble it never sets right,

and a welcome benefit it never bestows.

Nor do I think Ibn Ḥassān wicked

when he displays his integrity and displays it again.

The man of injustice hides his scheming beneath his calm,

just as fire hides its blaze beneath the ashes.

And in many a document his hand has embellished

false testimony not worth its ink.

And many an heiress—he seized the inheritance, excluding her,

when misfortunes had placed her reins in his hands.

So she went away, her hand never having reached the provisions,

and he went away carefree, eating her provisions.

So if the injustice he commits were darkness

on the horizon, dawn would never dispel its blackness.
