Time grew gentle with us, though it had been harsh,
Time softened to us though it was harsh,
And became our ally after the clash.
And after skirmish, it became an ally,

And the shades of noble deeds drew near, and made easy to pluck
The shadows of favors drew near and their

Fruits were picked easily for seekers.

Welcome to him whose meadow the songs of praise grazed,
Welcome to one whose meadow praises nurtured,
So in his days they came to know beneficence.
So we knew in his days the good deed.

And his compassion bent him toward his visitors,
His pity bent down to his visitors,
So he showed them adversity’s tatters as fertile countryside.
So he showed them sustenance after hardship.

With his arrival, generosity became verdant,
Green, fluttering over the seekers of bounty.
Rustling delicately over the destitute.

And the lands of al-Hisn gloried in the moon that
The land of the fortress became adorned with the moon
Bestowed an eclipse upon the shining moon.
Who gifted the shining moon eclipses.

The prince strung for them necklaces of eminence,
The emir composed for it necklaces of pearls
That rose at their necklines—and earrings too.
More noble than its twisted shells.

لا يَستبينُ ضُؤُولةً ونُحوفا
And the Euphrates dwindled before his house,
The Euphrates seemed humble next to his house,
Too small and slender to be clearly seen.
Indistinguishable whether flowing or stagnant.

So if it could set a course toward him, it would turn back,
If it could head to it, it would never suffice
Until it was seen diverted from its course.
Until it’s seen diverted from its course.

Were it not for Abu al-ʿAttaf, you would not find generosity
If not for Abu Attāf, the dew would not be fresh
Fresh, nor would Time be compassionate.
And time would not be gentle.

A king whom his enemy sees as compassionate,
A king whom his enemy sees inclining
And the seeker of his bounty sees as approachable.
And his aid seeker accustomed.

He lowers his gaze; yet his glances, if he casts them, are nothing
When he frowns his glances contain only
But flourishing life and death.
A stern yet gentle life.

And an illustrious man who scorns to turn away from battle
His dignity disdains to bar ferocity
Until he has humbled nostrils and noses.
Until it humiliates the arrogant and vain.

And a young hero who, when kings are obsessed with their own safety,
A lad, when kings crave to protect him
Becomes obsessed with bringing his enemy low.
Becomes enamored with felling his foe.

Ask Ibn Mazruʿ about his onslaught, when he
When you conquered Ibn Marzūq, though he
Fled, parting curtains of swirling dust.
Fled the deadly blows loftily.

لينَ المِهادِ أسِنَّةً وسُيوفا
And dread of his sword and spearpoint made him see
The cowardice of his sword and blade showed him
The softness of his bed as spearheads and swords.
The softness of the cradle and swords.

He bore down upon him in combat, until, when
You finished him in battle until when
The foe yielded the reins, he sheltered him in his distress.
He yielded, you spared him desirously.

You placed a collar of favor on him when you mastered him,
You collared him with favor when you ruled him
A heavy collar, yet light upon necks.
A heavy collar, yet easy on the neck.

غَرَرٌ يُفيدُ اللَّوْمَ والتَّعنيفا
And al-Daylami was swept astray by a hope—
The Daylamite was tempted by him
A perilous gamble that brings blame and rebuke.
To deceit that earns blame and rebuke.

He came to you like a schemer deceiving his prey,
He came to you like a plotter hunting his prey
So he roused in you the proud, noble lion.
So he stirred the she-lions’ wrath.

And most deserving of becoming a lion’s prey
Most deserving to fall prey to a wolf
Is he who knowingly rushes in upon it.
Is one who dares to raid it brazenly.

You bound the gaze of his eyelids, and made him see
You shackled his glances so you saw him
The height of forenoon as a dense night upon him.
Drowsy by day as if night enveloped him.

And left him unable to see his beloved
You left him unable to discern his state
Except as a phantom visiting him in sleep.
But a fleeting dream in slumber.

And likewise, anyone whose fire was kindled in your land
So too, he whose fire sparked in your land
Had his eye struck blind by your fire.
Became extinguished by your fire.

Springtime Ribi’a is no match for you
Has made your precincts her spring and summer abode.
Though she settled by you in spring and summer.

You lodged her in a grassy meadow of generosity,
You made her a meadow for generosity
A level plain, and a lofty mountain of glory.
Smooth plain, a hillock for the noble.

So remain safe—you have built up so many noble deeds,
So take heed - how many bastions you built
And demolished wealth, both inherited and newly gained.
And razed an effete fortune and whim!

Don’t dress her in what suits you not
In its striped fabrics but a radiant nobleman.
Except the most splendid of robes.

Her words flowed as if she brought
It had brought a spring and an autumn of beauties.
The springtime of beauties and autumn.

"Their ruins robbed her words of fervor."
