أعادَrestored الحَياthe life-giving rain سُكْرَthe drunkenness of النَّباتِthe plants وقدthough they had already صَحاsobered
وجدَّدَand renewed منsomething of عهدِthe days of الربيعِspring الذيwhich انمحىhad faded away
The rain restored the plants' drunkenness, though they had sobered,
and revived something of spring's vanished days.
وباتَand spent the night زِنادُthe flint of البرقِlightning يَقدَحُkindling نارَهits fire
علىover الآسِthe myrtle حتىuntil اهتزَّit quivered فيهwithin it وقدَّحاand struck sparks
And lightning's flint kept kindling its fire all night
over the myrtle, till it quivered there and struck sparks.
كأنَّas though حَمامَthe doves of الرَّوضِthe garden نَشْوَانُdrunk كلماwhenever
ترنَّمَsang melodiously فيamong أغصانِهits branches أوor تَرَجَّحاswayed to and fro
The garden's doves seemed drunk whenever
they sang among its branches or swayed to and fro.
ولاذَand sought shelter نسيمُthe breeze of الرَّوْضِthe garden منbecause of طولِthe length of سَيرِهits journey
حسيراًweary بأطرافِat the tips of الغصونِthe branches مُطلَّحاexhausted
And the garden breeze sought shelter after its long journey,
weary and exhausted at the tips of the branches.
فباشرَso it touched وَرْدَthe blossoms of الأُقحوانِthe chrysanthemum مُشرَّفاًcrenellated
وصافحَand shook hands with وردَthe flowers of الباقِلاَءِthe broad bean مجنَّحاwinged
So it touched the chrysanthemum's crenellated blossoms,
and shook hands with the broad bean's winged flowers.
وحلَّلَand loosened منfrom أزرارِهِits buttons (buds) النَّوْرَthe blossoms فاغتدَىand so became
كلفظِlike the speech of جَليبٍa foreign slave همَّintended أنto يتفصَّحاspeak eloquently
And it loosened the blossoms from their buttons, so they became
like a foreign slave's speech as he strove for eloquence.
وشَقَّand split open علىin لونِthe color of الخدودِthe cheeks شَقائقاًanemones

And it opened anemones in the hue of cheeks,
a hue the herd's eyes found lovelier and more becoming.
أراكَit showed you نصالَthe heads of النَّبلِthe arrows قبلَbefore اتِّضاحِهits full emergence
وحلَّand fell due خَراجُthe tribute of النبلِthe arrows حينَwhen تفتَّحاit blossomed
It showed you arrowheads before fully revealing itself,
and the arrows' tribute fell due when it blossomed.
