الكَأسُthe cup تُهْدِيgives إلىto شُرَّابِهاits drinkers فَرَحَاًjoy
الكَأسُ تُهْدِي إلى شُرَّابِها فَرَحَاً
فَمَاso why لِهَذَاwith this الفَتَىthe young man صِفْرَاًdevoid مِنَof الفَرَحِjoy
فَمَا لِهَذَا الفَتَى صِفْرَاً مِنَ الفَرَحِ
The cup brings joy to its drinkers.
The cup gives joy to the one who drinks from it
Why, then, is this young man devoid of joy?
Yet this young man is devoid of any joy
يَصْفَرُّhe turns pale إنْif صَبَّpours سَاقِيهِhis cupbearer لَنَاfor us قَدَحاًa cup
يَصْفَرُّ إنْ صَبَّ سَاقِيهِ لَنَا قَدَحاً
كَأنَّماas though دَمُهُhis blood يَنْصَبُّpours out فِيinto القَدَحِthe cup
كَأنَّما دَمُهُ يَنْصَبُّ فِي القَدَحِ
He turns pale if his cupbearer pours us a cup,
He turns pale when the cupbearer pours us a drink
As though his blood were pouring into the cup.
As though it were his blood pouring into the cup
