The Bedouin raiding band came upon you at dawn;
Early dawn assailed you, O Mu'āwiyah of the Arabs
so guard your garments, O Abu al-Khattab.
So guard your clothes, O Abū l-Khaṭṭāb

Rabi‘a ibn Mukaddam has come to Iraq,
Rabī'ah ibn Mukaddam came to Iraq
and ‘Utayba ibn al-Harith ibn Shihab.
And 'Utbah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Shihāb

Have we any doubt that they are those very two,
Is there any doubt that they are the ones
in murderous assault, not in the truth of their descent?
In cunning, not in lineage and origin

They brought poetry from its homelands to you
as merchants bring rare imported wares.
Like traders bringing wares in camel bags

The poets’ marvels in what they brought
The masterpieces of poets in what they prepared
are coupled with the writers’ rarities.
Are paired with wonders of books

Perdition to a people whose judgment
Damn a people whose dreams never cease
and minds remain in error and ruin!
And minds lost in error and confusion

Their share consists of cutting swords and spears,
For them are the sharp swords and spearheads
and from manuscripts, the choicest spoils.
And from ostriches the choice feathers

They launched the foulest raid on letters,
They launched upon literature the ugliest raid
wounding the hearts of literature’s beauties.
That wounded the hearts of its beauty

Beware, then, the movements of two vipers in a wasteland,
So beware of the moves of uncouth boors
and beware the movements of two lions in a thicket.
And beware the moves of roaming wolves

They do not rob a wealthy man; instead,
They do not rob a brother of wealth
they plunder the fruits of minds.
But usurp the fruits of minds

If the pillar of speech turned against them
I am the one at whose door eloquence stands.
Then I am the one who halted speech at my door

Or they descend into humiliation, then I am the one
whose pavilions are pitched on the commanding height.
Whose glorious curtains were drawn shut

How long they tried to attain my heights

Yet could only grasp specks of my dust

through helplessness; nor do slaves, when they race,
Helpless, though when war horses raced
stand where their masters stand on the day of the wager.
The slaves did not stop at masters' positions

Indeed, I defended poetry, though it belonged to a company
I defended poetry, though it belonged to a band
of rotting remains, except for their names and titles.
Of riffraff, nothing beyond names and titles

And I struck the pretenders, though my blows
was only for the form of letters.
Were for literature's form, that was my aim

So Nabīṭ of the Khālidiyya claimed
my poetry, strutting in the embroidered finery of my garments.
My poetry and pranced in my robes

The elders of the al-Za‘faran monastery—you see them
Elders whose age is saffron, you see them
around the cross, with their backs bowed.
Around the cross, pillars of crucifixion

They descended upon Dharmat lowly, with sullen gazes
that have never risen since creation, and humbled necks:
Who never smelled but the yoke's disgrace

For his livelihood, you find him scribe

their heads are clothed by upraised tails.

Their boar guards the edges of their grazing herd,
Their income protects the sides of their domain
and spends the night defending them, his tusks bared.
So fangs spend the night deprived of it

rather, he had tended them for ages.
Nay, he herded them through the eras

In life, stripped of venerated comrades

ragged in his living, his cloak faded,
Feeble in living, pale in cloak

They gained currency through instruments of obscenity, and imagined
They spent their musical instruments and fancied
that time had sped them onward and made me stumble.
Time had flowed and ebbed against me

A people, if seeking kings for some wish
have their turbans shaken out at the gates;
Their turbans spill at the doors

They looked upon my poetry, desiring

They drank it and confessed its sweetness
yet many a sweet thing has become a scourge of torment.

In a raid where lances did not pierce coats of mail
by blows, nor were the spears moistened with dye,
And spears did not redden with blood

from its beauty by infatuation or youthful dalliance.
From its beauty by pleasure or band

When I cast a man’s covenant back to him,
And if I renege on my covenant with a man
let him prepare for my assault and punishment.
Let him ready for my power and punishment
حاولتُماyou both assailed جبلاًa mountain كأنَّas though رِعانَهits peaks
فَوقَabove السَّحابِthe clouds الغُرِّthe white غُرُّwhite سحابِclouds
You two assailed a mountain whose peaks seem
You attempted a mountain whose peaks
white clouds above the white clouds.
Loom over the darkest clouds like dark clouds
فإذاand when أصابَكماstrike you both غضابُthe angry سِهامِهاits arrows
غَبَرتْthey remain مدىthroughout الأيامthe days غيرَnot غِضابِangry
And when its angry arrows strike you both,
So if its arrows' wrath befell you both
they remain through the days, no longer angry.
The days stretched out dusty beyond anger
حاولتماyou both assailed جبلاa mountain كأنّas though رعانهits peaks
فوقabove السحابthe clouds الغرthe white غرwhite سحابclouds
You two assailed a mountain whose peaks seem
You attempted a mountain whose peaks
white clouds above the white clouds.
Loom over the clouds, the dark clouds
وجريتُماand you both raced فيin غِرَّةٍheedlessness فَنكصتُماthen you both recoiled
منfrom سَوءةِthe disgrace of العُقبَىthe outcome علىon الأعقابِthe heels
You raced in heedlessness, then retreated
You charged in foolishness, but recoiled
back on your heels from the disgrace of the outcome.
From fate's evil, upon your heels
ورميتُماand you both assailed المِسكَthe musk الذَكيذَfragrant بغَيْبةٍwith slander
وذَكاؤهyet its fragrance يُربيsurpasses علىover المُغتابِthe slanderer
You cast slander at the fragrant musk,
You flung exquisite musk with slander
yet its fragrance surpasses the slanderer.
While its scent nurtures the slandered
فَلْتَلْفَحَنَّكُماso may they surely scorch you both سمائمُthe scorching winds of مَنطِقيmy speech
ولتُغْرِقَنَّكُماand may they surely drown you both سُيولُthe torrents of شِعابيmy ravines
Let the scorching winds of my speech sear you both,
So let my censure's poisoned vapors choke you
and the torrents of my ravines drown you both.
And my torrents of poetry drown you both
ولْتَسريَنَّand may it surely travel by night معwith الجَنوبِthe south wind إليكماto you both
مغموسةًdipped فيin الشَّرْيcolocynth أوor فيin الصَّابِbitter sap
And let it travel by night to you with the south wind,
Sweeping with the south winds toward you
dipped in colocynth or bitter sap.
Steeped in honey or tree saps
ولْتَطْلْعَنَّand may it surely emerge منfrom الفِجاجِthe mountain passes كأنهاas though it were
غُرَرُthe white blazes of الجيادِthe steeds لواحِقُtucked-up الأقرابِflanks
And let it rise from the mountain passes as though it were
Emerging from the darkness as if they were
the white blazes of lean-flanked steeds.
Stallions pursuing their mares
ولأَضْرِبَنَّكُماand I shall surely strike you both علىfor ماwhat خُنْتُماyou both betrayed
بصوارمٍwith cutting swords للشِّعرِof poetry غيرِnot نَوَابِيfailing to cut
And I shall strike you both for your betrayal
I will strike you for what you betrayed
with poetry’s swords that never fail to cut,
With unrelenting poetry swords, not mine
متواتراتٍin succession لاnot تغُبُّكماleaving you both a day’s respite وهلand is there
للصُّبحِfor dawn راعيthe shepherd of الليلِnight منany إغبابِskipping a day
in succession, leaving you no respite—and is there
Recurring, never missing you, for does
any day’s respite for dawn, the shepherd of night?
Dawn's guide leave night in the dark?
تشتقُّcleave أجبالُthe mountains of الشَّقيقِal-Shaqiq فإنand if سَرَتthey travel by night
ذاتَtoward اليمينthe right خطَتْthey cross غِمارَthe depths of الزَّابِal-Zab
They cleave the mountains of al-Shaqiq; if they travel by night
The red hills quake, so if they head
to the right, they cross the deep waters of al-Zab.
Right, they tread the flood's abyss
نبلٌarrows أُغلغلُI drive deep منكماinto you both مسومةًaimed
بمكامنِat the lurking places of الأحقادِgrudges والأطرابِand raptures
Arrows I drive deep into you both, aimed
Arrows I embed in you, engraved
at the lurking places of grudges and raptures.
With hatred's haunts and disturbances
فأريكماso I show you both الدنياthe world بهwith it مُغبرَّةًdust-darkened
حتىuntil يُظَنَّit is thought اليومُthe day يومَa day of ضَبابِfog
With it I show you both the world dust-darkened,
I show you the world through them dust-covered
until the day is thought a day of fog.
Till today seems a day of gloom
فلْتَعْلَماso you both must know إنif لمdoes not تَهُبَّblow عليكماupon you both
أبداًever نسيمَa breeze جِنايتيof my harvest وجَنابيand my domain
So take heed, should there fail to blow upon you
Know if my wrongs' winds do not
ever a breeze from my harvest and my domain.
Blow upon you, ever my grudge and punishment flee
وَلْيَحْذَرِand let him beware الكّذابُthe liar تِربُكُماthe peer of you both يداًa hand
باتتْhas spent the night تَحِنُّlonging إلىfor طَلَىthe throats of الكذَّابِthe liar
And let the liar, your peer, beware a hand
And let the liar beware your morass, a hand
that spends the night yearning for liars’ throats.
Yearning to coat his tongue's tip in lies
فَلَكَمْfor how many an عدوٍّenemy قدindeed أطلْتُI prolonged عَذابَهhis torment
بِكُلومِwith wounds from رَيِّقَةِthe choicest الكلامِspeech عِذابِsweet
How many an enemy’s torment I have prolonged
How many a foe whose torment I prolonged
with sweet wounds dealt by the choicest speech!
With conversation's caustic bitterness?
وشَّيْتُهاI embroidered them قبلَbefore الحُتوفِdeaths كماas ارتدىwas clothed
بالوَشْيِin embroidery ظهرُthe back of الحيَّةِthe snake المُنسابِgliding
I embroidered them before death, as
I clad it in mail before the coats of mail
the gliding snake’s back is clothed in embroidery.
Like the snake's back dressed in scales
لولاbut for أبوAbu (father of) الخطَّابِal-Khattab طالَwould have lasted تنكُّريmy rancor
للخَطْبِagainst misfortune يظلِمُنيthat wrongs me وساءَand would worsen خِطابيmy speech
But for Abu al-Khattab, my rancor would have lasted
Were it not for Abū l-Khaṭṭāb, my loss
against misfortune that wrongs me, and my speech would have soured.
In speeches would oppress me, spoiling my discourse
وهبَتْbestowed شمائلُهhis qualities الجزيلَabundance وأَبرأَتْand healed
يُمناهhis right hand منof نَدَبِthe scars of الزَّمانِtime إهابيmy skin
His qualities bestowed abundance, and
But his sublime traits pardoned me
his right hand healed my skin of time’s scars.
As his right hand cleared my stains of time
وكفاكَand it is enough for you أنَّthat الدَّهرَtime أَعْتَبَنِيmade amends to me بهthrough him
فَكَفَيْتُso I was spared عَتْبيmy grievance عندهin his presence وعِتابيand my reproach
It is enough that time made amends to me through him,
It is enough that fate reprimanded me through him
so I was spared my grievance and reproaches in his presence.
So to him I stayed my reproach and blame
