وأَظِلمُand wrong عَزْمةًa resolve جَلَتِdispelled الظَّلاماthe darkness
Shall I curb an ambition that has met a noble man,
Shall I despair of an aspiration that aimed high,
And wrong a resolve that dispelled the darkness?
Or lose hope in a resolve that dispelled darkness?
صَدَدْتُI turned away عنfrom العراقِIraq صُدودَthe aversion of قالٍone who loathes
وشِمتُand I watched for الغَيْثَthe rain إذwhen حَلَّit settled in الشَّآماal-Sham
I turned away from Iraq as one who loathes it,
I held back from Iraq with unyielding defiance,
And watched for rain when it settled in al-Sham.
And endured the rain as it poured on Damascus.
فأَلفَيْتُso I found الأميرَthe emir أليفَa companion of مَجْدٍglory
مُعَنَّىًlove-tormented بالمَكارِمِby noble deeds مُستَهاماutterly enamored
So I found the emir a companion of glory,
So I came to know the prince, intimate with glory,
Consumed with love of noble deeds, utterly enamored.
Fixed on noble deeds, lofty of endeavor.
تَقَلَّدْتُI girded on الحُسامَthe sword العَضْبشkeen-edged (apparent typo) منهfrom him
ولمand did not أَتَقَلَّدِI gird on السَّيفَthe sword الكَهاماblunt
I girded on the keen-edged sword from him,
I took up the sword, sharp and trenchant,
And did not gird on the blunt sword.
And did not take up the blunt and pointless blade.

Some people are blamed for withholding wealth,
They blame me for hoarding wealth,
Yet he is lavish in generosity until he is blamed.
And are prodigal with gifts until blamed.
حُسامُa sword العَزمِresolve ليسَnot يَنوبُbefalls خَطْبٌa calamity
فنحمَدَso that we praise عندَهin its presence إلاexcept الحُساماthe sword
He is a sword of resolve; no calamity befalls
The sword of resolve needs no speech for praise;
In which we praise anything but the sword.
We are content with it and nothing else.
فليسَso is not عدوُّهُhis enemy منهfrom him بِناجٍable to escape
ولوand even if وافَىhe reached علىupon النَّجْمِthe star اعتِصَاماseeking refuge
So his enemy cannot escape him,
No enemy can approach it, seeking escape,
Even if he reached a star to seek refuge.
Even were he to cling to a star for refuge.

May you be safe! How often you have watered the gardens of my praise
Safe are you - so how many meadows of praise
With fine drizzle from your bounty, or gentle rains.
Have you watered with showers of gifts and spears?

And how many favors of yours have journeyed
And how many generous hands journey
To our homelands, year after year!
To our lands, year after year?

Clouds from the lands of al-Sham are now
Clouds from Damascus now loom
Pouring copiously upon the land of al-Hisn.
Over the land of citadels, gathering.

Sleepless-eyed, they spend the night journeying,
Sleepless eyes keep shedding tears
Then pay a night visit to young men who were asleep.
As their young heroes slumber.
تحاربُthey wage war عنهمُon their behalf الأَعْداءَthe enemies حَرباًwarfare

They wage war against the enemies on their behalf;
They battle the foe with war
And how could dawn make peace with darkness?
While dawn makes peace with darkness.
أقمتُI stayed وكيفَand how يرحلُdeparts عنكfrom you راجٍa hopeful seeker

I stayed—and how could a hopeful seeker leave you,
I stayed - but what visitor could leave you
Having seen you as the sea and a noble king?
Who saw the sea and the magnificent king?

But for you, I would not have urged the mounts onward,
Without you, I would not spur my steed
Nor continued my night journeys for a full month.
Or travel the miles, month after month.
وأقربُand closest ماwhen أكونُI am منto الأمانيwishes
إذاwhen استمطرْتُI seek rain منfrom يَدِكَyour hand الغَماماthe clouds
And I am closest to my wishes
My fondest hopes are when I draw
When I ask the clouds of your hand for rain.
Rain from your hand like clouds.

And I am most content with the nights
My happiest nights are when your arrival
When your smiling welcome returns to me and endures.
Returns to me, lasting and renewed.

And if I clothe you in the striped robes of rhyme,
If I weave rhyming verses for you
You have indeed clothed me in immense blessings.
You have clothed me in rich garments.
