أوor أنto تَكُفَّrestrain غُروبَtorrents of دمعٍtears هاملِflowing
أو أن تَكُفَّ غُروبَ دمعٍ هاملِ
Passionate longing refuses to heed a reprover,
The youth refused to be silenced by a reproacher
Or to check the torrents of streaming tears.
Or to halt the sunset of overflowing tears

إنَّ الهَوى فيه اختلافُ مَنازلِ
He recognized the dwellings at al-Liwa and wept blood;
He recognized the stages through yearning, so he wept blood
Indeed, love has differing stations.
For yearning has differing stages

And whenever he sees the traces of a departed tribe,
Whenever he saw the traces of a departed loved one
He greets them, saying, 'May you be watered at a wayfarer's return!'
He greeted and said, “You rode off on a swift camel”

He never comes to himself, as though an archer's breath
He does not awaken as if the breath of lightning
Had reached him at dawn, or Babylon's choicest wine.
Dawned on him or the flood of Babel

Yet he ought to recover, now that he has seen
And his way is to face when he has seen
Youth's fellowship driven away by banishing gray hair.
The garment of youth, prey to vanishing old age

The reproving women met a man bereft of his good sense;
He met the reproachers unemployed of his patience
So they shunned one with adorned hair-partings, yet bare of sense.
So they turned away from my present state of separation

Hail to you, O ruin, whose decay answered
You were greeted from hills which gathered their ruins
On the day at al-Aqiq, the questioning of flowing tears.
On the day of initiation, by the question of streaming tears

We go barefoot and dismount, for it is too sacred
We descend and camp though he is of utmost sanctity
To be profaned by a rider or one wearing shoes.
To be disgraced by a rider or horseman

How sweet was his drinking place and its people
Between al-Udhayb and Riqqat Aqil!
Between al-Udhayb and the wisdom of one reasonable

And our desire lay between a white, cutting blade
What we want is between a bare, quivering blade
That quivers from it, and a brown, slender spear.
And a sheathed, withered one

O chains of lightning that glanced at the earth
The chains of lightning that glanced at the soil
Late at night, and festooned its meadow with chains,
And clad its meadow with necklaces

You recalled to us the raptures in the shade of youth,
You reminded us of cheer in the shadow of youth
And life in the drowsiness of heedless time.
And living in the heedless days of time

In days when I hid my passion from a spiteful foe,
Days when I concealed my youth from a critic
Deliberately, and stole my delight from a reprover.
Intentionally and stole my pleasures from a reproacher

Will the gaze, if I keep it unbroken, ever reach
Can a glance convey, if I continue it
One whom a visitor's greeting cannot reach?
To one whom no greeting of a connector reaches?

I speak of the distant land under another name,
I hint about the distant land through another
And turn from it the reins of a yearning heart.
And restrain the reins of a leaning heart

And I wish the rain would do to its plains
I wish the alive would act with its plains
And rugged uplands what the emir does for a hopeful petitioner.
As the prince acted with the hopeful

مَشفوعةً لُعفاتِه بصواهلِ
The giver of lithe, budding-breasted maidens, who go forth at dawn
The Bestower of the necklaces that the gazelles donned
To his petitioners, accompanied by neighing steeds;
Commended by their chastity with earrings

And the giver of his precious life to the spears,
The Giver of the precious soul to the spear
With generosity in which he exceeded a giver's bounds.
Nobly exceeded in that the limits of a giver

والنَّحلُ تُعْنِقُ فَضلَه في الباطلِ
Abd Allah's swift advance is along the paths of glory,
The hugging of Abdullah in the ways of elevation
While false claims vainly race after his excellence.
As the bees hug his superiority in futility

والمجدُ حَمْلُ مغارمٍ وحمايلِ
He bore the debts and sword-belts after him;
He carried financial liabilities and pregnancies after him
And glory is bearing debts and sword-belts.
While glory is the carrying of financial liabilities and pregnancies

So Time strokes in him the white blaze of a winning steed,
So time wipes away the ignorance of a predecessor
Which it met, first among the foremost racers.
Who met the earliest predecessors and ancients

When he recovered, our hopes rejoiced,
When he reached maturity, our hopes were realized
With the joy of the thirsty seeing clear water at watering places;
Good news of quenching thirst saw the clarity of springs

Or like dark-green slopes whose blossoms were gladdened
Or like the blinking of lightning—its light kindled—
By the gleam of the clouds' drizzle and downpour.
The flashing of a hillock to the clouds and rain

After the eyes of tribes had overflowed
After the eyes of tribes overflowed with sorrow for him
In grief for him, and the patience of tribes had ebbed.
And the patience of tribes was spent

His recovery rescued us when, in anguish,
Innocent, he tended to us while we were
We were drowning; it set our feet on the ridges of the shore.
Drowning in affliction, so he made us mount the coast

It arrived, and good fortune was the first to rise,
He came so good fortune was the first rising
With its rising, and ill fortune the last to set.
With his rise and bad luck the last setting

O champion of Wa'il, you are the first lord
Glories of Wā’il, are you the first master
For whose eminence Wa'il's little fingers are folded in counting.
Whose praise is amplified by the humps of Wā’il?

And the sword is God's sword; never has it been known
The sword is Allah’s sword—no futile stroke
To strike in vain at the meeting of champions.
Was known for it in the arena of heroes

And the spear was excessive, unjust toward the unjust,
The spear transgressed, unjustly, against the unjust
In thrusting, and veered justly away from the just.
Stabbing and defeating the just from the just

The arrow, none faces it during its swiftness
In battle's terror only by one shielding himself with his vital parts.
In fright but the God-fearing with fighters

Your enemies find no respite from you, for they
The enemies do not finish with you, for they are
Face an all-consuming task in fighting you.
Busy defending against your fighting, occupied

Their strongholds looked to you, but when
Strongholds once you advanced upon them.
You advanced against them, it was no stronghold

You brought their lofty, towering height level with their ground,
You made its lofty, inaccessible peaks touch the ground
As though you had struck them at dawn with earthquakes.
As if you had greeted them with earthquakes

How many a mighty stroke of yours has eclipsed a renowned man,
How much tyranny you erased from the fang of a tyrant
And a favor of yours has brought an obscure man to fame!
And work of yours that roused one slumbering!

As though I were a neighbor of falling spring rain.
As if I were a neighbor of arriving spring

Five fingertips showered me generously with them.

The billows of the flowing, continuous flood

So hear a horseman's words from a man on foot.
So hear the speech of a horseman from a footman

The master of poetry, and you the master of bounty.
The lord of composition while you are the obtaining lord
