O you whose fingertips are like a rain cloud traveling by night,

and whose conduct is ever free of shame,

Do you not see the snow, whose fingertips have sewn

a garment fastened over the world with buttons?

Fire, yet it does not give off

light; and water, yet it does not flow.

And wine has been unavailable to us this morning,

for sale, even at a dinar for a dinar's weight.

Come, then, give me wine chilled by the north wind—

you will pour a radiant dawn over the night.
