O haunt of our youthful passion, this is a yearning man's plea,

who, stirred by you, thrills to dearly cherished love.

Shall I visit al-ʿUmr by night, among a band

who have taken every road to pleasure?

Or shall I see the lofty palace turbaned

    in a mantle of cloud, delicate as a cloak;

and the monastery's cells, which, but for separation,

I would not have treated with aversion or disloyalty,

their walls reddened, their fragrance wafting,

    as though they were built of saffron perfume;

and the abode of the humble-hearted, who secluded themselves

in remembrance, among its crests and other crests?

I visit it among a hypocrite putting on a fair show

and a heretic defending his unbelief,

and a mellow-voiced one whose neck you would take for his ewer

whenever he rises to shed the ewer's tear.

Over pure wine they exchange rare verses,

which, radiant, are taken for cups of pure wine.

They issued from thoughts, yet seemed like

shimmering wine flowing from the strainer.

A time whose turns were gentle with me for a moment,

then assailed me and proved anything but kind.

So when shall I visit the lofty-crested domes,

and come to drink between al-Nasr and al-ʿAyyūq,

and see the hermitages on the backs of their hills,

like howdahs on the backs of she-camels,

red, with white ones gleaming among them, as though

you had interspersed a carnelian necklace with camphor?

A lovesick man recalled, before reason's restraint,

two shades: the shade of love and the shade of gardens.

Then his tears scattered across his cheek,

for none could shield him from separation.
