خَليليَّmy two friends إنَّindeed الغيثَthe rain أَوَّلُهits beginning قَطْرُdrops
ونارُand the fire الهَوىof passion قدalready صارhas become دُخانُهاits smoke جَمْرُembers
My two friends, rain begins with drops,
My beloved, the first of rain is but a drop
And the smoke of passion's fire has turned to embers.
And the fire of passion, its smoke has turned to embers
فلاso do not تعذُلانيyou two reproach me إنif هَوِيتُI fell in love فإنَّنيfor indeed I
هَويتُI fell in love رجاءًin hope أنthat يُساعِدَنيwould favor me الدَّهرُtime
So do not reproach me if I fell in love, for I
Reproach me not if I love, for I love
Fell in love hoping that time would favor me.
In hope that time will help me
فلمّاbut when أبانَrevealed الدهرُtime ليto me غدرَthe treachery of أهِلهits people
تولَّيتُI turned away عنهمfrom them إذwhen تَدارَكَنيcame to my rescue الصَّبرُpatience
But when time revealed its people's treachery to me,
When time showed the betrayal of its people
I turned away from them when patience came to my rescue.
I turned from them, as patience came to my aid
فكمfor many a منof مُحِبٍّlover قدalready تبيَّنَbecame clear عُذْرُهُhis excuse
فرامَthen he sought اصطباراًpatient endurance فاستقادَand yielded لهto him الصَّبرُpatience
For many a lover whose excuse had become clear
How many a lover, his excuse was clear
Then sought endurance, and patience yielded to him.
He persevered patiently, aided by patience
فلمbut did not يَكُbe قلبيmy heart فيin الهَوىlove مثلَlike قلبِهhis heart
فللهِso to God حمدٌpraise دائمٌeverlasting ولهand to Him الشُّكرُgratitude
Yet my heart in love was not like his heart;
My heart was not in love like his
So to God belongs everlasting praise, and to Him gratitude.
So praise be to God, and thanks forever
سأتُرُكُI shall forsake مَنْthe one whom أهوىI love بماwith what هوhe أهلُهis worthy of it
ولوand even if كانَwere مَنْthe one whom أهوىI love يُشاكِلُهresembles him البَدرُthe full moon
I shall forsake the one I love as he deserves,
I will leave the one I love as he deserves
Even if the full moon resembled the one I love.
Though he rivals the full moon in splendor
وأصبوand I am drawn إلىto قولِthe words of الذيthe one whom قدalready عرَفتماyou both know
ألاcome! سَقِّنيpour me خمراًwine وقلand say ليto me هيit الخمرُthe wine
And I am drawn to the words of the one you both already know:
And long for the words of one who knew
Come, pour me wine, and tell me, 'It is wine.'
Give me wine, and say "This is wine"
ألاcome! سَقِّيانيyou two, pour me منsome of سلافَةِthe choicest part of خَمرةٍwine
يجانبُهاshuns it المَحمودُthe praiseworthy man والأبلَهُand the fool الغَمْرُinexperienced
Come, you two, pour me some of the choicest wine,
Give me old wine
Which the praiseworthy man and the inexperienced fool shun.
Shunned by the virtuous and drunk by fools
مُصَفِّقَةًclarified by decanting كأساًa cup كأنَّas though شُعاعَهاits radiance
تَوَرُّدُthe rosy flush of خَدٍّa cheek حينَwhen يبدوappears بهon it السُّكْرُdrunkenness
Decanted into a cup, its radiance seems like
Pour in a goblet that seems
The rosy flush of a cheek when drunkenness shows upon it.
Like the blush on a cheek when drunk
فإنand if كسروهاthey weaken it بالمِزاجِby mixing حكَتْit resembles لناfor us
غلائِلَthe sheer tunics of عُشَّاقٍlovers أضرَّcaused harm بهمto them هَجْرُseparation
And if they weaken it by mixing, it evokes for us
If broken by mixture, it tells
The sheer tunics of lovers whom separation has harmed.
Of lovers harmed by separation's sting
فلاso no خَيْرَgood فيin القُربىcloseness إذاif ماever (emphasis) مَلْلتَنيyou tire of me
ولاand no خَيْرَgood فيin نُعمىa blessing يُقارِبُهاaccompanies it كُفرُingratitude
So there is no good in closeness if ever you tire of me,
No good in kith if you weary me
Nor is there good in a blessing accompanied by ingratitude.
No good in boons next to blasphemy
