Is there any protector for noble virtues?

Or is there any champion for Ahmad?

    How did Death's ambitions soar

to the radiant moon that he was,

    after his virtues had smiled

like blossoms on a verdant bough?

    O remains, the soil's fragrance

is, through your sweetness, the fragrance of perfume.

Had the earth the power, it would not

part with you on the Day of Resurrection.

The noble virtues looked upon you

and found none to equal you.

So they stood bareheaded over you,

    gazing with weary eyes.

    So depart, despite your foes,

    and valor and illustrious lineage.

You parted from me and left me

a target for the calamities of the ages.

So I donned the garments of sorrow

and cast off the garments of joy.
