أَحُلُّI dwell بعَقوةِin the precincts of الشَّرفِhonor التَّليدِancestral
وَأَلْبَسُand I don جُنَّةَthe armor of الفَخْرِpride العَتيدِever-ready
I dwell in the precincts of ancestral honor,
and don the armor of ever-ready pride.

ببَردِin the coolness of شَرابِهhis drink وشَجَاand a bone in the throat of الحَسودِthe envier
And I know I am what chokes my foe
on his cool drink, and a bone in the envier’s throat.

And I pardon, while crimson deaths around me
flaunt themselves, and thunderbolts are among my troops.

I see letters ascending, and rhymes
with dust-smeared breasts upon the ground.
فياoh أَسَفيmy sorrow علىfor خُلُقٍa disposition جديدٍnew

تَعِزُّthey are honored لدَيهin its keeping أوor جَدٍّa fortune سَعيدِhappy
Alas, for a fresh disposition
under which they might be honored—or a happy fortune!
فليتَwould that اللهَGod أنجدَهاcame to their aid بِحُرٍّthrough a noble man

Would that God might aid them with a noble man,
swift at their summons, valiant.

And a barber-surgeon composes verse; there came
his oddities to me by post.
مَزَحتُI jested فجدَّso he grew earnest فيin عَتْبٍreproach تلظَّتْblazed

I jested; he grew earnest in reproach, and there blazed
in its wake the flames of verse.
فياoh بعدَthe remoteness of السَّلامَةِsafety منfrom أَكُفٍّhands
تُغَرُّare deceived بِهِنَّby them ضاريةُthe fierce ones among الأُسودِlions
How remote is safety from hands
by which the fiercest lions are deceived!
فلاso do not تُبعِدْdistance سيوفَكَyour swords منfrom سيوفٍswords
فكمfor how often فتكَتْthey struck fatally بجبّارٍat a tyrant عَنيدِobstinate
So do not set your swords apart from other swords:
for many a stubborn tyrant have they slain.
صوارِمُkeen blades تَضربُstrike الأعناقَnecks جَهْلاًin ignorance
وتحكمُand hold sway فيover الجِبَاهِforeheads وفيand over الخُدودِcheeks
Keen blades that strike necks in ignorance,
and hold sway over foreheads and cheeks.

بلَفظٍwith words مثلِlike تَفويفِthe variegated striping of البُرودِcloaks
You soothe whoever you have assailed with them
with words like the striped patterns of cloaks:
فمِنْso, of نَظْمٍverse تُدبِّجُهyou embroider it مليحٍgraceful
ومنand of نَثْرٍprose تُهَذِّبُهُyou refine it سَديدِsound
now graceful verse that you embroider,
now sound prose that you refine.

علىaround أدراجِscrolls of شِعرِكَyour verse والحديدِand the steel
How often his towel is rolled up
around the scrolls of your verse and the steel!
فيُنشِدُهthen he recites to him الذيwhat حبَّرْتَyou composed فيهabout him
ويَحلِقُand he shaves رأسَهhis head بعدَafter النَّشيدِthe recitation
Then he recites to him what you composed about him,
and shaves his head after the recitation.
