ما عَمَّرَ اللهُ أُمَّ عمَّارِ
I do not hope to shed my burdens of sin
as long as God keeps Umm ʿAmmār alive.

I have accepted disgrace in debauchery; and would
disgrace upon disgrace anger one like me?

And my gray hair has zealously wronged me,
so I do not deem gray hair worthy of reverence.

And a young gazelle never ceases to grant me,
when he grows tipsy, a kiss for a dinar.

For a sand dune and a bough lie within his thin robes,
and night and dawn above his buttons.

And his chest and waist have been apportioned
between a cross and a girdle.

from it carnelian, slipping out of pitch,

like a ruffian bent on attacking the enemy, who did not
desist until he saw blood flowing.

My private parts are chaste, shunning the forbidden, but
my tongue is a rogue's tongue.
