How can I escape Iraq, when

I have chosen there the mines of generosity?

    I saw there wantonness, joined

At its fringes to learning and wisdom:

    Gatherings where the judges dance,

When they grow tipsy, wearing necklaces of acacia blossoms,

As though they were kings of Himyar, while

Their crowns rise high above their locks.

And many a companion blends ribaldry for us

With a sweet trait of character.

His gray hair is playfully dyed with wine

By fingertips like the crimson of the ʿanam shrub,

Until eyes mistake his gray hair

For Faʿlān’s gray hair, dyed with blood.

If God waters any dwelling, may He water

Baghdad with all the steady rains it seeks.

Oh, how sweet the company of learning there,

And life between wealth and want!
