لمhas not تَشْرَبِdrunk السِّنُّage قُوىthe strength شَرابِهاof its drink
Give it freely to me—for youth, from its arrows.
Age has not drunk away the strength of its drink.
فهيَfor it is خِلافُunlike الرّاحِwine وانتسابُهاand its lineage
فيin قِدَمِthe antiquity العُمرِof age إلىto أحقابِهاits epochs
For it is unlike wine, and its lineage
Reaches back in antiquity to wine's own epochs.
دَخِينةٌdusky والثلجُand snow منfrom تُرابِهاits dust
خضرٌgreen جرَىflowed الإفرندُthe watered-steel pattern فيthrough أثوابِهاtheir robes
Dusky, and snow is part of its dust.
They are green; a watered-steel pattern flows through their robes.
فاسودَّتِso turned black الأطواقُthe collars فيon رِقابِهاtheir necks
تفوحُwafts ريَّاthe fragrance المِسكِof musk فيwithin قِرابِهاtheir sheaths
So the collars on their necks have turned black.
The fragrance of musk wafts within their sheaths,
ومِسكُهاand their musk الفائحُwafting منfrom شَرَابِهاtheir drink
إذاwhen السيوفُthe swords انحَزْنَdrew away عنfrom أثوابِهاtheir robes
And their fragrant musk comes from their drink,
When swords draw away from their robes.
حيثُwhere صريعُone laid low الرَّاحِby wine أوor يَحياlives بهاthrough it
وأعقَبَتهand it gave him in return البِرَّkindness منinstead of عِقابِهاits punishment
Where one is laid low by wine—or lives through it.
And it gave him kindness in place of its punishment.

وَكَرْبةِand the distress المخمورِof the hungover man والتهابِهاand its burning
For it is the soul's cure for its ailments,
And for the hungover man's distress and its burning.

حُجْبُهاits veils فيin الظِّلِّthe shade منpart of حِجابهاits concealment
The cupbearer who tends it grows rich through it.
Its veils in the shade are part of its concealment.
وعَقَدَand he fastened الآسَmyrtle علىover قِبابهاits domes
وصانَهاand he protected it عنfrom ذامِهاits censure وعابِهاand its blemish
And he fastened myrtle over its domes,
And protected it from censure and blemish,
وقامَand he rose يجلوهاunveiling it علىbefore خُطَّابهاits suitors
كأنماas though فيin الرَّحْبِthe open expanse منof رِحابهاits courtyards
And rose to unveil it before its suitors.
As though, in the open expanse of its courtyards,
لطائماًperfume-laden caravans تنفَحُwaft scent فيin عِيابِهاtheir baggage
فالصائمُso the fasting man القائمُwho stands in prayer منamong أصحابِهاits companions
Perfume-laden caravans were wafting scent within their baggage.
So the fasting man who stands in prayer is among its companions,
وشاربُand the drinker الخمرةِof wine منamong شُرّابِهاits drinkers
And the wine-drinker is among its drinkers.
