Care's stumble between goblet and cup,

and the delight of lover and beloved—

such is my day of pleasure, revealing

the deeds of the dreaded day of battle.

How fine the arrows nocked by

glances, warded off with hearts alone,

amid steeds of wine that brought

joy near to me at a canter,

and wine jars drawn up in a rank, as

war's foot soldiers stood on the morning of battle,

    and wine bowls like hollows

filled to the brim by bucketfuls of pouring rain!

So the cups, tilting within them, seem like

the stars of night inclined toward their setting.

We are children of this cup; we do not

turn from drinking it to another drink.

The days schooled us when they showed us

their calamities' assault on every man of letters.

And we learned that we are death's share,

so we took a share of love.
