And a man with faded garb and pallid limbs,

disheveled, long a stranger to comfort,

poverty had driven him into the open,

so his face was exposed to sunlight and air.

Dust-covered, he drew sustenance from a dust-gray net,

light, yet heavy at its edges,

as though it were a cloak's loose weave.

He charged it with watching the daughters of water,

with eyes never betrayed by closing,

    so numerous they surpassed counting.

And it came forth, filling the beholder's eye

with each fish pure in back and innards,

    white as white silver,

or like a lovely, nubile maiden's arm.

So, when he risked his life, he won

the joy of good fortune out of misery.

He appeared to us in two robes of toil,

wrought by early-night travel and nocturnal journeying,

while dawn was a fetus in darkness's womb,

and we were kindling the flames of tawny wine.

Then he passed by, while the strings contended,

carrying something like butter from a skin churn.

He had released it from a green deep

into a deep where it plays amid light,

as though laid upon the pebbles,

    gazing from a blue sapphire,

in a coat of mail with silvered folds,

cut for it from the late-morning sun,

or from the brocade of a radiant raincloud.

    Our food—blessed be such food!

We prefer it in summer and winter

to tender dried meat and roast,

sustenance we were granted without toil,

we count it among abundant blessings.
