ولوعةٌand burning anguish خَطَراتُstirrings الشَّوقِof longing تُبدِيهاreveal it
ولوعةٌ خَطَراتُ الشَّوقِ تُبدِيها
An ardent longing born of you stubbornly prolongs itself,
A youthfulness from you insisted in its persistence,
And a burning anguish that the stirrings of longing reveal.
And a passion, the ideas of yearning reveal it.

والدمعُ يَنشُرُها إن بِتُّ أَطويها
So passion reveals it if I set about concealing it,
So ecstasy shows it if I go to hide it,
And tears unfold it if I spend the night folding it away.
And tears spread it if I fold to conceal it.

How many a white gazelle among the women in litters, whose glances
How many glances in the eyes have a look I notice,
At times extinguish her breaths and at times revive them.
That kills its breath for a while and gives it life.

And a tear, bewildered in the cheek's redness,
And a tear in the redness of the cheek confused,
As though its flow were the merriment of tawny wine.
As if the flood of hail is flowing.

They are gazelles: if startled by imminent parting,
It is the gazelle, so if it grazes near vegetation,
They graze on hearts with glances in succession.
It shepherds the hearts with consecutive glances.

Their figures have incited passion against me; if
The slender waists tempted me, so if
I seek forgetfulness, their swaying bends my heart back.
I bend to pick berries, my heart bends with it.

I do not restrain tears when their torrents are about to flow,
I don't chide the tears if its planets intend,
And the soul's wishes have grown far beyond its reach.
And the soul has been distanced from its wishes.

May you be watered in radiant Mosul—what a city!—
It quenched you in blossoming Mosul, from a land
By a downpour mirroring the generosity of its people.
Whose rain's generosity tells of its people's generosity.

Shall I lament life there, or mourn for
Should I mourn living in it, or should I wail
Its days, or be consoled for its nights?
Over its days, or should I be consoled from its nights?

A land for which whoever leaves it yearns,
A land whose people yearn when they leave it,
And whoever draws near it praises life within it.
And praise living in it when they stay close to it.

Soft-soiled, sweet of breath, and smiling,
A sanctuary for the beautiful fragrant breath, smiling,
Almost trembling with pride throughout its reaches.
It almost trembles in wonder at its sides.

The Tigris cleaves the blossoms of its gardens,
The Tigris splits the lights of the gardens in it,
Like a broad sword blade with polished edges.
Like polished metal sheets its edges.

I cannot bear being away from it if I go far, even if
I cannot have patience from it if I become distant, even if
I were given the world and all it holds in exchange for its shade.
I were compensated for its shade with what is in the world.

عَنِ السَّحائبِ إن ضنَت هَوامِيها
The home of a people whose bounty forever takes the place
An abode of people whose generosity takes the place
Of the clouds when their showers grow miserly.
Of clouds, if they are stingy with their rain.

يَفنَى الزمانُ ولا تَفنَى مَساعِيها
And a great tree, towering with the branches of the Azd,
And a date palm grove with extended branches,
Time perishes, but its endeavors do not perish.
Where time passes and its efforts do not fade.

No calamity has befallen glory and eminence
No substitute reached glory and supremacy,
Without being adorned by the bounty of the sons of Fahd.
Except the generosity of Bani Fahd adorns it.

Indeed, noble virtues are traits worn as a robe
Indeed, virtues are manners worn
By Abu al-Fawaris, so they swaggered proudly in him.
By the father of knights, so it staggered because of him.

Gifts: whenever their evening showers set forth
Gifts, whenever their winds blow
From his two palms, their morning showers come pouring down.
From his comforts, their wanderings lead me.

An ambition that always flows
With the stars in their highest courses.
With the stars at its highest courses.

A resolve the foolish night folds with it,
As though dawn were a fragment of its radiance.
As if dawn is part of its hills.

His bounties have embraced the world; his aspiration
His comprehension spread good deeds in the world,
Is to aid its supplicants or set its captives free.
Whether to help its seekers or relieve its troubled.

His hopeful petitioner gains his wishes before humbling himself,
It contains wishes before spending the face,
While those who hope in kings turn back in despair.
When kings despair of its seekers.

O Abu al-Fawaris, how many blessings you have bestowed!
O father of knights, how many blessings you gained,
In bounty, those near and far are alike.
The close and the distant equal in generosity.

Traits of yours put the gardens to shame when
Attributes from you that shame the gardens when
Fresh blossoms smile within their haunts.
The light smiles bashfully in its meanings.

A blessing whose pure essence sustains life's serenity.
Established blessings that continue the purity of living.
