يقولون إذ أنشدت شعر معذبي
بلفظٍwith wording بديعexquisite فيin النظامthe arrangement عجيبwondrous
بلفظٍ بديع في النظام عجيب
They say, when I recite the poetry of my tormentor,
They ask, as I recite my tormentor’s verse,
“Exquisite in diction, wondrous in composition—
with exquisite wording, wondrous in its arrangement:
أللمتنبيis it al-Mutanabbi’s? ماwhat تقولyou say فقلتso I said لاno
أللمتنبي ما تقول فقلت لا
ولكنهbut it is واللهby God شعرُverse حبيبيmy beloved
ولكنه والله شعرُ حبيبي
is what you recite al-Mutanabbi’s?” I reply, “No—
“Is what you recite al-Mutanabbi’s?” I reply, “No—
but by God, it is my beloved’s own poetry.”
but, by God, it is my beloved’s verse.”
