O you who possess a face and speech,

By their beauty you have dispelled the distress of gatherings.

I marveled at your saliva’s coolness—how it bestowed

On my heart a passion that drew in the scorching noons.

And how your drooping eyelid bears a blade

Whose triumph seared the innermost hearts of predators.

I seek protection for you from the sleeplessness in my eyelids,

And from tears that wore away the substance of the eye sockets.
