My beloved said, “Why do you weep with tears

Yellow, as the corners of your eyes overflow like this?”

So yellow? Thus grief overflows.

قلت إن الدموع تألف خدي

فلهاذا تصفرُّ خوفَ الفراقِ

I said, “The tears are fond of my cheek,

I said, tears grace my cheek,

So they turn yellow for fear of parting.”

So why do they yellow with fear of parting?
