أرقٌ على ارقٍ ومثلي يأرقُ
May an eyelid ransom you, its slumber already driven away
Your eyelids ransom me, though sorrow has departed from them,
By sleeplessness upon sleeplessness—and one like me lies awake—
Restless upon restlessness, and my like remains sleepless,

وحشاشةٌ في حشوها نارُ الأسى

وجوى يزيدُ وعبرةٌ تترقرقُ
And a remnant of life, with grief's fire within it,
A blaze within its ashes, the fire of anguish,
And growing heartache, and a tear that wells up.
Increasing ardency, with tears flowing gently,

And may you be shielded, O all I long for, by your pining lover's
And protect you from your afflictions, O epitome of wishes,
Sleepless eye and throbbing heart.
An eye that’s laid down, and a heart that pounds,

وانظر إلى برحمةٍ لا أغرق
So hold back the clouds of my tears from my cheek,
So withhold the clouds of my tears from my cheeks,
And look upon me with mercy, lest I drown.
And look upon me with mercy, lest I drown.
