My longing for them and my sorrow endure.

For whom still yearns my heart in melancholy mood.

جفوني وضنوا بأخبارهم

They shunned me and withheld news of themselves,

My eyelids ache to hear some news of them;

So I began seeking it from my companions.

I ask about them from my comrades kind.

عسى خبرٌ عنهم صادقٌ

Perhaps some true news of them

O may some tidings of my absent friends,

I shall read in al-Shihab's letter.

True ones, I find within the shooting star!
