ملكت كتاباً أخلق الدهرُ جلده

ملكت كتاباً أخلق الدهرُ جلده

وما أحدٌ في دهره بمخلد

I acquired a book whose leather binding time had worn out;

I possessed a book whose cover time had worn

And no one in this life is immortal.

Yet no one in their time endures forever

إذا عاينت كتبي الجديد حاله

إذا عاينت كتبي الجديد حاله

يقولون لا تهلك أسى وتجلد

يقولون لا تهلك أسى وتجلد

When my new books behold its condition,

When they see the state of my book renewed

They say, “Do not perish from grief, and be steadfast.”

They say, do not grieve or lose composure
